LIBERTY, Mo. - The Truman State Bulldogs edged out William Jewell 61-58 for their first Great Lakes Valley Conference road victory of the season on Saturday.
Ellie Weltha led Truman with 16 points, Emma Bulman scored 14 and Maddie Niemeier recorded another double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
Truman State took their largest lead at 12 at 44-32 with under three minutes left in the third quarter. A 16-2 burst by William Jewell, aided by a six-point possession, gave the Cardinals a four-point advantage with 6:45 remaining in the game.
The Bulldogs used the free throw line to stymie the momentum and Gracie Neff tied the game at 52 each with 2:34 showing.
Jewell's Chloe Frank and Truman's Emma Bulman exchanged made free throws to keep the game tied then Ellie Weltha drew a foul and converted on freebies to push the Bulldogs up 56-54.
Following a miss on the Cardinals' offensive end, Bulman grabbed the rebound and was rewarded on the other end with a hoop to extend the lead out to 58-54 with 33 ticks left.
Ayden Shannon closed the gap to two but Bailey Kliewer made her free throws to essentially put the victory in the bag.
The Bulldogs were 27-of-33 from the line and outscored the Cardinals by 19 at the charity stripe. Every Bulldog that played scored from the line. Truman also won the glass by 25 rebounds.
Truman State will play six of their next eight at home starting on Thursday evening against McKendree.
