KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Trey Shearer's deep corner three-pointer with 3.4 seconds left gave the Truman State Men's Basketball team a 90-87 victory over Northeastern (Okla.) State on Wednesday evening in Pershing Arena.
The Bulldogs scored the first 12 points of the game but free throw shooting by the RiverHawks erased that deficit. Northeastern State whittled away a 14-point Bulldog lead down to three at 53-50 just five minutes into the second half. NSU was 19-of-28 from the line while the Bulldogs were 13-of-14.
From there it was game on. The teams exchanged the lead 10 times down the stretch with the RiverHawks leading 82-80 with 2:35 showing.
Landon Eiland converted on a three-point play to give the Bulldogs the advantage until two free throws with 34 seconds left by Ethan Blackmon knotted the score at 87 each.
Following a timeout with 14 seconds remaining, Xavier Hall slipped in the paint and was covered up forcing a jump ball. The Bulldogs had the arrow and on the ensuing inbounds play, Hall whipped a pass to Shearer in stride and he buried the contested three right in front of the Bulldog bench for the lead.
Northeastern State had one last attempt but a three-point attempt came up short.
Five Bulldogs scored in double figures led by 16 from Brennan Lovette. Matt Hefner had 14, 12 from Eiland and 11 each from Isiah Reams and Shearer. Xavier Hall had nine points and career-best 13 assists.
Trey Phipps paced Northeastern State with 20.
The Bulldogs move to 3-1 and will open conference play next Tuesday evening at home against Rockhurst at 6 p.m.
