KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Strong pitching and timely hitting led to a doubleheader sweep by the Truman State Softball team over Illinois Springfield on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs won the opener 4-2 behind a complete game from Kaylyn Jones and the nightcap 7-2. Emily Wood drove in five runs in the two games and nine for the weekend in which the Bulldogs posted a 3-1 record.
Cameryn Patterson got things started for the Bulldogs with an RBI double in the first and Wood centered a pitch and drove it over the centerfield fence, into the gusty southeast wind to put the Bulldogs up 3-1 after two innings.
UIS stranded six runners in the first three innings but Kaylyn Jones found her groove and did not allow a baserunner until the seventh, putting down 10 straight Prairie Star hitters from the third through sixth inning.
Lily Arndt provided a pair of key plays in the game. She doubled with two outs in the fourth to score Cali Coombs from second in the fourth to make it 4-1 and then with the tying run at second base in the seventh, flashed the leather and make a reaction catch at second base for the final out of the game on a liner.Â
Maddie Anderson allowed the first two runners to reach in game two then settled in as she went six and a third innings of work to pick up the win in game two.Â
Patterson doubled with two outs in the first and Brieanna Klein brought her in with an RBI single.
The Bulldogs would add three runs in the second with Sofia Birkenholz getting the RBI hit and Wood diving in two with a single.
Birkenholz homered for the second time this season to leadoff the fourth inning and following a triple by Madi McCarty, Ryleigh Jones would drive her in on a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0.
The Bulldogs took advantage of a two-out error in the sixth as Wood knocked in Jones on a double to left center field to make it 7-0.
UIS would push across a pair of runs in the seventh to close the gap.
The Bulldogs are now 5-1 in the GLVC and are scheduled to step outside of conference play on Tuesday hosting Missouri Western for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. before traveling south to Southwest Baptist and Drury next Friday and Saturday.Â
