ST. CHARLES, Mo. - Truman State Men's basketball suffered a 72-70 loss to fifth seed William Jewell in the GLVC Basketball Tournament. The Bulldogs came into the tournament as the fourth seed.
The opening ten minutes of the first-half were competitive, with neither team going up by more than four. The William Jewell Cardinals then took an eight-point lead with 9:11 left before 3-pointers from Matt Haefner and Casen Lawrence gave the Bulldogs a 23-22 advantage. The Cardinals took the lead back, and went into the break up 36-30. Truman State shot 11-26 from the field and 7-11 from three in the first twenty minutes of action.
The Bulldogs fought their way back in the second-half, slowly chipping away at William Jewell's lead. With 14:05 remaining, Truman took a 43-41 lead with the help of two free throws from Landon Eiland. The Cardinals quickly took the lead back, going up seven with 10:21 left in the game. William Jewell was up 68-63 at the 1:26 mark, and Truman cut the lead to one with layups from Trey Shearer and Landon Eiland with 0:22 left. The Cardinals made four-straight free throws in the 18 seconds left, going up 72-67. Xavier Hall hit a three at the buzzer but it was not enough as the Bulldogs lost by two. The Bulldogs shot 13-28 from the field and 3-11 from behind the arc in the second-half.
Xavier Hall and Landon Eiland both had a team-high 15 points. Hall had two rebounds, four assists, and a steal, and Eiland had five rebounds, and an assist.
Casen Lawrence scored 12 points, all from 3-pointers, and tallied two rebounds, and an assist as well.
Kobi Williams dropped nine points along with five boards and two assists.
Matt Haefner had eight points with four rebounds, a block, and two steals.
Brennan Lovette had six points with five rebounds, two assists, and a steal in the contest.
Trey Shearer scored five points, four rebounds, and four assists.
Joe Knutson recorded two rebounds.
