ROSEMONT, Ill. – Truman State senior
Kaylyn Jones and sophomore
Charlotte Chelich combined to toss a five-inning no hitter on Sunday as Bulldog Softball finished the weekend 4-2.
The 'Dogs pounded out 12 hits against Hillsdale (Mich.) in a 12-0 win early Sunday, including five doubles, but a three-run top of the seventh by Roosevelt (Ill.) in the back half of the double header tripped up the Purple and White, 5-4.
The crooked numbers against Hillsdale started in the top of the first when Truman State plated four runs on three hits with a lead-off walk to Junior
Cassie Smith getting things going. Smith swiped second and scored on an redshirt sophomore
Emily Wood single who then stole second and led a double-steal with freshman
Avaree Taylor who reached on a walk. A sacrifice by senior
Caragan Baker scored Wood to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead, then Taylor scored on an RBI-single to right center by junior
Lydia Feiste. Sophomore
Kyleia Salyars plated Feiste and the fourth run for the 'Dogs to finish things in the top half of the first.
Jones went to work after being staked the 4-0 lead with two strikeouts and a grounder to short in the bottom of the first blanking Hillsdale over the next four innings surrendering one walk to three Ks. Hillsdale got the dreaded lead-off walk when Chelich entered in relief for the bottom of the fifth but Chelich coaxed a liner and flyout to strand the runner at third and secure the 12-0 win.
Smith, Chelich, Wood, Taylor, and freshman
Eva Viox all recorded doubles with six runs combined from the top three hitters in Smith, Chelich, and Wood. The Bulldogs stranded the only two baserunners allowed to seal the tenth Truman State no hitter since 1999 and record the sixth shutout of the season, already the most since 11 in 2019.
In the second game Sunday, Truman State broke a 2-2 tie with Roosevelt when freshman
Michaela Goad led off the bottom of the sixth and advanced to third on a sacrifice by graduate student
Nina Fenasci. Salyars reached after being hit by a pitch with Goad and
Camryn Kinsella, running for Salyars, scoring on consecutive wild pitches. Fieste, pitching into her fifth inning of relief after two innings from starter Jones, gave up Roosevelt's third run on three singles and a wild pitch. Chelich moved to pitcher to finish the game and got the first two outs of the inning before two wild pitches allowed Roosevelt to plate two and take the lead. The 'Dogs led off the bottom of the seventh with consecutive singles but could not score in their final at bat to fall by the 5-4 margin.
Truman State finished the weekend 4-2 with three shutouts to run its record to 11-8 on the season. Next weekend's Showtime Classic wraps the non-conference season next weekend with four games in Branson, Mo., Feb. 28-March 1.
