ROLLA, Mo. - It was a much-needed doubleheader sweep for the Truman Softball team on Sunday, with an 8-7 extra-inning win in the opener and an 8-3 victory in the nightcap.
The Bulldogs outlasted Missouri S&T in the opener, as the teams needed 10 innings to decide the result.
Truman led 3-0 after two innings on a sacrifice fly by Caragan Baker in the first and a two-run single by Nina Fenasci in the second.
The lead extended to 5-1 when Emily Wood hit a two-run single in the fifth; however, the Miners scored four times in their half of the inning to knot things up.
In the eighth, Baker drilled a home run, and Maddie Hickman singled in Lydia Feiste for a 7-5 lead. The first two S&T batters reached, and after a walk, the Miners had the bases loaded with one out. A strikeout brought Truman closer to the win, but a two-run single tied the game, with the potential winning run at third. The next hitter grounded out, extending the game into extra innings.
In the 10th, Lily Arndt reached after being hit by a pitch and scored from first on a double by Hickman.
Feiste moved to the circle and retired S&T in order for the save, while Charlotte Chelich earned the win.
In game two, the Bulldogs battled back from a 3-0 deficit with eight unanswered runs to sweep the doubleheader, 8-3.
Missouri S&T capitalized on free passes in the second, taking a 3-0 lead. The Miners walked four times in the frame and left the bases loaded.
Undeterred, the Bulldogs loaded the bases in the third with singles by Hickman and Kyleia Salyars and a walk by Madi McCarty. Cassie Smith singled to plate two, and Fenasci drove in Smith for the tying run. Taylor brought in Fenasci for the lead, and with two outs, Feiste added an infield hit to make it 5-3.
The Bulldogs tacked on a run in the fourth via a bases-loaded walk drawn by Taylor and added two more in the sixth, with Wood doubling in Smith and Taylor singling in Wood.
Taylor and Salyars each had three hits, while Wood went 2-for-3.
Feiste earned the win in relief after securing the save in the first game. She pitched the final five-plus innings with four strikeouts.
