ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Truman State women's basketball team dropped a 53-38 decision to Lewis University Wednesday evening at Neil Carey Arena. The Bulldogs fall to 8-8 overall and 5-3 in conference play, while the Flyers improve to 9-7 and 5-2 in the league standings.
The Bulldogs came out competitive in the opening quarter, trading baskets with the Flyers early. After Lewis took a 2-0 lead, Mallory Ott responded with a hook shot to tie the game at 2-2 with 7:47 remaining. Emajin McCallop gave Truman a 3-2 advantage with a free throw at the 7:07 mark, and the Bulldogs extended their lead to 5-2 when McCallop drove for a layup at 6:12. Lewis answered back to tie it at 5-5, but the Flyers closed the quarter strong with back-to-back three-pointers from Mallory Ramage to take an 11-7 lead into the second period.
The Flyers extended their lead in the second quarter, opening with a 13-7 run over the first three minutes. Samantha Campanelli sparked Lewis with five points during a crucial stretch, including a three-pointer and a pull-up jumper. The Bulldogs struggled to find offensive rhythm, managing just nine points in the period. Morgan Miller's three-pointer cut the deficit to 18-12, but Lewis took a 25-16 lead into halftime.
Truman showed life coming out of the break, as McCallop scored five points in the frame and Lexie White added four to pull within seven at 22-25. However, the Flyers responded with a run of their own, fueled by Campanelli's hot shooting from beyond the arc. The junior guard knocked down multiple jumpers to push Lewis ahead 41-31 by the end of the third quarter.
The Bulldogs were unable to mount a comeback in the final period, never getting closer than 11 points. Lewis's largest lead came became the final score at 53-38 as the Bulldogs put out a strong defensive performance, but couldn't find offensive rhythm in a tough GLVC battle.
