Kirksville, Mo.- In a match that had everything, the Truman State women's tennis team delivered a 4-3 victory over Quincy University on Senior Day, securing the Bulldogs' first Great Lakes Valley Conference win of the season in front of a home crowd at the Truman Tennis Courts.
The Bulldogs grabbed the early advantage with the doubles point, winning two of three matches. The team of Finley LaForge and MaryGrace Seymour cruised to a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles, while Belle Daniels and Rachel Bivens followed with a dominant 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles. Quincy took the No. 1 spot as Mahi Panchal and Anna Matino defeated Sydney Dial and Nayana Malangi, 6-3, but Truman walked away with the point and a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Singles play brought a series of momentum swings. Quincy quickly erased the deficit, taking the first two matches as Panchal downed Dial, 6-4, 6-3, and Nadia Araguas topped Malangi, 6-0, 6-2, putting the Bulldogs in a 1-2 hole. Truman responded with back-to-back singles wins to retake the lead. LaForge put together what head coach Steve Smith called her best singles performance as a Bulldog, handling Maria Sarria, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3.
Quincy pushed back ahead, 3-2, when Sofia Tesic beat Himari Maruyama, 6-3, 6-4. Smith noted that Maruyama elevated her game in the second set and pushed Tesic in a tight finish. Daniels then delivered a crucial win at No. 5, outlasting Heidi Navas in a tiebreak-first set before closing it out, 7-6(8), 6-2, squaring the match at 3-3.
With the match on the line, Seymour stepped up in a storybook moment. Playing at No. 4 singles, she battled back after splitting the first two sets and came through with a third-set victory to clinch a 4-3 Truman win.
Dial also turned in a strong performance at No. 1, covering the court exceptionally well against Panchal before falling in a closely contested match.
With the win, Truman improves to 10-9 overall and 1-3 in GLVC play.
"Everyone hit the ball very well yesterday, and the matches were very close, which was reflected in the individual scores," said head coach Steve Smith.
