Bulldogs Come Up Short In Clash With #4 Washburn

Box Score | Season Stats

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Cassie Lombardino scored a career-high 29 points as #4 Washburn (Kan.) held off a pesky Truman squad 57-51 in a match-up of previous conference unbeatens.

The Bulldogs (4-3; 3-1 MIAA) held the league's top ranked three-point shooting team to six below their season average and outrebounded the Lady Blues by a 39-27 margin but Lombardino was unstoppable inside as she made 12 of 19 field goal attempts.  Washburn (8-0; 4-0 MIAA) came in hitting eight treys a game.

Truman fell behind by a 13-2 score until super sub Nicole Gloor provided the offense off the bench again.  Gloor hit a pair of free throws and Amy Galey finished off a three-point play to get the Bulldogs moving in the right direction.

Breanna Daniels connected on two three-pointers late in the first half to give the Bulldogs a lead that they took to the locker room at 27-25.

The two teams swapped the lead seven times in the first nine minutes of the second half before Washburn pulled ahead for good at 39-38.  Truman was stuck on 38 points as they suffered through an eight and a half minute scoring drought with seven misses from the field and three turnovers.

Washburn's lead grew to as many as nine points with 1:57 to play before Daniels made baskets on back-to-back possessions to cut the Lady Blue lead to just five with 1:23 left.

Becka McHenry made one of two free throws with 28 seconds left but Lombardino iced the victory going two of four from the line.

After shooting 80% from the line in the first half, the Bulldogs made just seven of 13 attempts in the second and were three of six in the final 2:50.

Daniels led Truman with 14 points, her 12th consecutive game scoring in double-figures while Gloor added 13.  McHenry matched a career-high with 10 rebounds as Trumann had 14 offensive boards.

The Bulldogs will be idle until next Saturday night when they will host #8 and defending national champion Emporia State at 5:30 p.m.
