Bulldogs Heat Up After Cold Start To Down Blue Tigers

Box Score | Season Stats

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Trailing by 13 points and making just three of their first 29 shots from the field through the first 16 minutes of action, the Truman bench provided the spark needed in a 59-51 victory over the Lincoln Blue Tigers on Saturday afternoon in Pershing Arena.

The 'Dogs, behind senior Malorie Kiecker, junior Jenny Dorman and freshmen Bianca Szafarowicz, Katilin Stump and Kayla Klopfenstein finished the first half making five of the their final six shots, including four three-pointers while digging the team out of a 19-6 hole.

Vivian Essuon gave the Blue Tigers their largest lead at 13 points with 4:15 to play until Klopfenstein buried the right wing triple to get things going. Szafarowicz scored next followed by Stump's first collegiate triple to close the gap to five. Dorman drilled another trey to make it 19-17 before Bria Dillard stopped the 11-0 run with a pair of free throw makes.

Klopfenstein ended the half with another triple to bring the Bulldogs to within one at 21-20.

In the second half, Lincoln led by five with under nine to play before Amy Galey drove to the bucket and drew a foul, that marked the Bulldogs first trip to the charity stripe and then would make 12 of their 14 free throw attempts.

Brianna Daniels knocked down her second three-pointer of the game at the 5:39 mark that gave the Bulldogs a 41-40 lead. For Daniels, it was her 10th point of the afternoon which was the high mark for the team.

Dorman followed with a second long range bomb and Jennifer Conway took a feed from Amy Galey and went uncontested down the lane to cap off the 12-0 run.

Quenita Washington kept things interesting as she hit four “area code-type” triples before Becka McHenry finished the game with four straight from the line. Washington came into the game missing all three of her three-point attempts and finished with 12 points.

Essuon led the Blue Tigers with 19 points while going 9-of-12 from the field in 37 minutes.

Megan Sharpe pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds and had six of the Bulldog's 16 on the offensive glass.

Ten of the 12 Truman players scored as the Bulldogs shot just 22% in the first half but 46% in the second while making seven of 21 attempts from beyond the arc.

The Bulldogs will close the first half of conference play with a road trip to the University of Central Missouri on Wednesday night in Warrensburg. Tip time is slated for 5:30 p.m.
