Game Preview:
The Truman women's basketball team will begin the second round of conference play on Saturday on the road against Missouri Southern State University with a 1:00 p.m. tip off against the Lions. The Bulldogs won the first round against the Lions with a 71-58 victory on Dec. 1st in Pershing Arena in Kirksville.
Truman heads into the contest winners of their last two games and have won five of seven away from Kirksville this season. The Bulldogs overcame an 18-point second half deficit to down the University of Central Missouri on Wednesday night by a 78-74 margin in overtime. It was the largest deficit overcome by a Bulldog squad since they rallied from 19 against Upper Iowa in 2006 and in conference play, 15 against Central with 9:46 to play in the second half in 2003. Truman has overcome double-digit deficits in their last two games and three times this season.
Becka McHenry scored 12 of her career high 22 points in the second half including the game-tying basket as the buzzer expired and then scored four straight to give Truman their first lead of the night with 1:13 left in overtime. Amy Galey also set a career high with 16 points while knocking down two key three-pointers.
Breanna Daniels, who scored in double-figures for her 20th consecutive game with 13 points against the Jennies, leads the Bulldogs and is ninth in the MIAA with 15.1 points per game scoring average. Daniels had 16 in the first meeting with the Lions on four three-pointers.
The Lions are returning home after a two-game road swing through Nebraska-Omaha and Northwest Missouri. Southern won by 10 (76-66) behind Kelby Fritz's 20 points but lost a big game to the Bearcats in Maryville75-64.
In that loss to Northwest, the Bearcats closed the first half on a 22-6 run that turned a six-point deficit into a 10 point lead. The lead would expand to as many as 20 before Southern rallied to cut the lead to just seven with 5:50 left but that was as close as Southern would get in the 11 point loss. Jasmine Lovejoy scored 23 points on 8-of-20 shooting to lead the Lions while Gabby Curtis scored 27 for the Bearcats.
Lovejoy is second in the MIAA in scoring at 17.3 points per game. She is also fifth in rebounding (5.0/g) and third in field goal percentage (.505). She had 18 against the Bulldogs in the first match-up.
Last Game vs. Missouri Southern:
It was the Bulldog bench that got the job done in the first match-up with the Lions on Dec. 1st in Pershing Arena. Truman's bench scored 33 of the 73 points with Nicole Gloor sparking the team with 15.
The 'Dogs used an 11-0 run to overtake the Lions and led by as many as 16 points in the second half. Breanna Daniels led three Bulldogs in double-figures with 16 points followed by Nicole Gloor's 15 and Becka McHenry's 12.
Jasmine Lovejoy paced the Lions with 18 points while Michelle Hedgecock added 14 and Larrita Gipson scored 10.
Road Warriors:
Truman is 5-2 on the road this season and has matched the highest win total since the 2000-01 season. The most road wins in a season is eight set on three different occasions (1978-79, 1990-91 and 1998-99. The Bulldogs matched a program best four-game road winning streak from Dec. 4 through Jan. 3 this season. The Bulldogs four conference road wins are the most since the 1999-00 season.
The Bulldogs are shooting 44% from the field in road games and 33% from beyond the arc. Breanna Daniels averages 16.0 points per road game while Amy Galey leads in rebounds (5.3/g) and assists (4.5/g). Truman has outscored their opponents on the road 463-431 including a 41-point advantage in the second half.
Bulldogs At Home:
The women are 3-4 in games played in Pershing Arena this season. Breanna Daniels leads the team with 14.9 points per game and Nicole Gloor adding 10.0 a contest. Jennifer Conway averages 7.1 rebounds a game and as a team, Truman is a plus 4.6 in rebounding margin.
Shooting, the Bulldogs shoot only 35% from the field in home games and 34% beyond the arc.
Truman Looking For Better Starts:
The Bulldogs shoot 36% from the field in first half of conference games while shooting 42% in the final 20 minutes. For beyond the arc, Truman shoots 32% in the first and 33% in the second.
Truman has been outscored in league games by 21 points in the first half but have turned the tables in the second by scoring 32 more points than their opponents.
Around the MIAA:
Most of the teams have now reached the halfway point in league action or 11 games except for Missouri Western and Southwest Baptist. The Griffons and the Bearcats had their Wednesday night game postponed due to weather and will make the game up on Monday, Feb. 14th in St. Joseph.
At the turn, Washburn holds a one-game lead over both Emporia State and Northwest Missouri for the regular season conference championship. The Lady Blues sit at 10-1 followed by the Lady Hornets and Bearcats at 9-2. Northwest could make a serious move up the standings with two straight home games against Washburn and Emporia on tap.
Spots four through seven have become a bit congested with Missouri Southern, Missouri Western, Truman and Pittsburg State all within a game of each other. Southern is at 7-4 with Western a half game back at 6-4 and the Bulldogs and Gorillas a full game back at 6-5. Truman plays Southern on Saturday and then a home game with Pittsburg State to try and break out of that pack.
Central Missouri currently holds the eighth and final spot for the tournament with a 4-7 record, a half-game ahead of Southwest Baptist and one up on Fort Hays State at 3-8. The University of Nebraska-Omaha (2-9) and the Lincoln University Blue Tigers (0-11) round out the bottom of the conference standings.
Of Truman's remaining games, five of the six road games are against teams above the Bulldogs in the standings, while the five home games are against teams sitting below Truman.
Bulldog Tip-Ins:
- In conference only statistics, the Bulldogs are second in scoring defense (61.3), third in three-point field goal percentage (34.0%), first in defensive three-point field goal percentage (28.9%), and third in rebounding defense (35.6/g)..
- Breanna Daniels is ranked in five overall MIAA stat categories. She is ninth in scoring (15.1/g), ninth in field goal percentage (38.3%), seventh in three-point field goal percentage (35.4%), tied for eighth in three-pointers made (1.8/g) and seventh in minutes played at 33.5/g. In conference only stats, Daniels is 11th in scoring (13.7/g), tied for tenth in three-point field goals per game (1.7/g) and tenth in minutes played per game (33.5/g).
- Amy Galey is fourth in assists per game at 4.4/g, seventh in assist/turnover ratio (1.5) and third in minutes played at 34.7. In conference only contests, she is fifth in assists (4.4/g), third in the assist/turnover ratio (1.7), tied for 10th in defensive rebounds (4.5/g) and third in minutes played (35.7/g).
- Jennifer Conway is tied for eighth in blocks per game at 1.3/g and seventh in conference stats at 1.4/g. Conway is tied for 14th in conference only rebounding at 5.9 per game.
- Megan Sharpe is ranked 10th overall in offensive rebounds at 2.3/g and eighth in conference only offensive rebounding at 2.5/g.
- The Bulldogs have the highest single-game field goal percentage so far this season. Truman shot 60.9% (28-of-26) against Southwest Baptist on Dec. 7th. Truman also registered the best three-point shooting by percentage that game with a five of eight performance for 62.5%.
- Truman has posted the most field goal attempts than any team in the MIAA in a single game with 87 against Northwest Missouri and also the most rebounds by a conference team this season with 60 against the Bearcats, 27 on the offensive end.
· Truman is averaging 62.6 points per game, last season the Bulldogs averaged 61.6.

· Breanna Daniels leads the team with 15, 10-point plus games this season and has 47 for her career, including 20 straight. She is the active leading scorer with 812 points and has been the team's leading scorer in 12 of the 15 games.
· Seven different Bulldogs have been single-game leaders in rebounding with Jennifer Conway leading the way with four games with the most boards.
· Three Bulldogs have recorded double-doubles this season with two coming from Jennifer Conway and one apiece from Amy Galey and Megan Sharpe. Galey's was the only one that was for 10 assists and not rebounds.
Up Next:
The Bulldogs return home for a big game with Pittsburg State on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. Both teams enter Saturday with identical conference records but Truman won the first game in Pittsburg 55-46 after erasing a 10-point halftime deficit. The Gorillas will host Missouri Western on Saturday.
