Game Preview:
Scoring may be at a premium on Wednesday night as the top two defensive scoring teams in the MIAA will hook up in a key conference battle in Pershing Arena at 5:30 p.m. The Truman Bulldogs (8-8 overall, 6-6 MIAA) are tops in conference defensive scoring allowing 61.5 points per game while the Pittsburg State Gorillas (9-7 overall; 7-5 MIAA) are a tenth of a point behind the 'Dogs allowing 61.6 points per game.
In the first meeting this season between the Bulldogs and the Gorillas, Truman outscored Pitt State 32-13 over the final 16 minutes and dealt the Gorillas a 55-46 home loss on Dec. 4th. Truman was able to erase a 10-point halftime deficit with Nicole Gloor and Breanna Daniels each scoring eight of their 14 points in the final 20 minutes. The Bulldogs shot 52% in the second half while the Gorillas shot just 25% in the final period including a 1-for-10 performance from beyond the arc. Courtney Tate and Drew Roberts led Pitt State in scoring as they each scored 17 points which was 34 of the team's 46 total points.
Truman is looking to bounce back after falling 64-40 to Missouri Southern on Saturday afternoon. No Bulldog scored in double-figures as the team was held to just 30% shooting in the second half. The Lions took a six-point halftime lead and expanded it to 26 while holding Truman to their low mark this season in total points.
Pittsburg State has reeled off five victories in their last six games played including a 70-56 dismantling of Missouri Western on Saturday. Drew Roberts, the team's leading scorer at 12.3 points per game, dropped in 17 on the Griffons while Kylee Baldetti added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds to go with six blocked shots and four steals.
One key the Bulldogs will have to watch is the three-point shooting of the Gorillas. Pitt leads the conference overall with 7.2 treys a game and in conference play have averaged 6.8 three-pointers. Truman allows the opposing teams 5.3 triples a game and are fourth overall in defending the three at 30.7%.
For Truman, they will need to get to the foul line. Overall, Truman is the top free throw shooting team in the MIAA at 73% while Pittsburg is the worst shooting team at the line hitting 61% overall and 59% in conference games.
A win by the Bulldogs would…
- Would tie Truman with Pittsburg State at fifth place with a 7-6 conference record and they would hold the season tie-break over the Gorillas with the two-game sweep.
- Would equal Truman's home record at 4-4 overall and the Bulldogs would be 3-4 in conference play at home with five games left in Pershing Arena.
- Would give the Bulldogs nine wins on the season and seven in league play. The nine wins would be just two fewer than last year's total of 11 with nine games left on the schedule and the seven conference wins would be the most since the 2007-08 season (7-11).
A win by the Gorillas would…
- Would move Pitt State into a potential fourth place tie with Missouri Southern at 8-5 in the conference. The Lions won the first game against Pittsburg State earlier this season.
- Would drop the Bulldogs into a potential tie for eighth place with Central Missouri at 6-7. Truman defeated the Jennies last week and won't play until the last game of the regular season.
