EMPORIA, Kan. – The Bulldog Women's Basketball team could not overcome a slow start as they fell to #23 Emporia State University (Kan.) 70-49 on the road Saturday.
Both teams started sluggish with just eight total points through the first seven minutes of action. However it was Truman (8-2, 3-2 MIAA) that remained cold as the Lady Hornets (8-1, 4-0 MIAA) built up their first double-digit lead with 7:58 left in the half.
Truman's first made field goal came a minute later when Nicole Gloor (Overland Park, Kan., Blue Valley) knocked down a jumper to end a 0-for-14 drought. The Bulldogs would shoot just 16% in the first half from the floor but were still within range by going 12-of-17 from the foul line and trailed 34-20 at the break.
Jennifer Conway's (Waterloo, Ill., Waterloo) basket early in the second half cut the deficit to 10 points but a 14-3 run over the next six minutes sealed the Lady Hornet's eighth straight win this season and 19th straight over the Bulldogs in White Auditorium.
Gloor finished with a game-high 16 points for the Bulldogs with 14 coming from the foul line in 18 opportunities. Conway finished with 13 points and five rebounds. Rachael Remick (Hillsboro, Iowa, Harmony) scored a season high eight points and Bianca Szafarowicz (Wheeling, Ill., Wheeling) added seven on three of four shooting.
Emporia's inside game was a difference maker as the Lady Hornets outscored the Bulldogs 44-14 in the paint and added 17 second chance points on 12 offensive rebounds. Kelsey Balcom paced ESU in scoring with 16 points while Merissa Quick added a dozen points with 12 rebounds.
Truman, who came into the game with the second best three-point field goal percentage in Division II, was held without a made field goal from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs were 0-of-6. Truman missed all 10 of their three-point attempts, in two separate games, last season against the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
The Bulldogs will be off until January 2nd when they will host Fort Hays State University (Kan.) in Pershing Arena for a 1:00 p.m. tip.
