KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – In the battle of unbeaten teams on Saturday, it was Courtney Tate's jumper with 23 seconds left that was the difference as Pittsburg State defeated the Truman Bulldogs 79-78 in a wild affair in Pershing Arena. Becka McHenry's jumper as time expired was just off the mark allowing the Gorillas to claim the victory.
Truman (6-1, 1-1 MIAA) was down 21 with a minute left in the first half but bounced back off the canvas in the second and took their first lead in the period on McHenry's (Fraser, Mich., Fraser) jumper with 1:42 left. That basket put Truman in front 76-75.
The Gorillas (8-0, 2-0 MIAA) jumped back on top following a pair of foul shots by Lizzy Jeronimus with 1:11 showing but Nicole Gloor (Overland Park, Kan., Blue Valley) gave Truman the lead again with 49 seconds left as she matched her career high with 22 points.
Tate would score on the ensuing possession and following a timeout, McHenry's jumper from the left baseline rattled the rim before falling away as the horn sounded.
Jeronimus scored 20 of her game-high 24 points in the first half as Pittsburg closed it out on a 20-9 run and led 49-31.
Breanna Daniels (Ridgedale, Mo., Hollister) went over the 1,000 career point mark connecting on a three-pointer with 12:05 to play to pull Truman to within four. Pitt would eventually extend the lead out to 10 with 7:18 left before the Bulldogs scored 10 of the next 11 points to get within one with 3:44 to go. Daniels finished with 13 points.
For the second straight game, McHenry scored 20 points and moved her season average 13.6 points. Jennifer Conway (Waterloo, Ill., Waterloo) also was in double-figures with 14. Truman also won the rebounding battle again as they grabbed 11 more rebounds including a 21-10 advantage in the second half.
Truman will host Southwest Baptist University (Mo.) on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m.
