Washburn Uses Late Run To Overtake Bulldogs Late

Box Score | Season Statistics

TOPEKA, KAN. – The Truman women's basketball team had chances to possibly deliver the knockout blow to the #16 Washburn Lady Blues but the home team bounced back with a haymaker and delivered a 22-4 run in the last seven minutes to claim a 62-53 victory over the Bulldogs on Monday night in Lee Arena.

Truman (11-11; 9-9 MIAA) led by as many as 14 points and by nine points with seven minutes left to play but Stevi Schultz scored all 19 of her points in the second half including 16 in the final seven minutes to lead Washburn (18-4; 14-4) to a big victory.

Breanna Daniels (Ridgedale, Mo., Hollister)' three-pointer with 7:32 left gave Truman a 49-40 lead however Schultz converted on a three-point play to begin the late push by the Lady Blues.

Washburn used the line quite a bit to come back as seven of their final 22 points came via the stripe and the final stats appeared to be quite “charitable” in favor of the Lady Blues. Washburn was 12-of-16 from the line while the Bulldogs set a school record with just one free throw attempt in the 40 minutes of action.

Truman closed the first half on a 16-3 run and when Bianca Szafarowicz (Wheeling, Ill., Wheeling) scored to start the second half, the Bulldogs led by 14 points. Washburn whittled it down to four but Szfarowicz again made a hoop and the Bulldogs seemed to have withstood the Lady Blue burst until things collapsed late.

Daniels led Truman with 14 points while Becka McHenry (Fraser, Mich., Fraser) added 12. The Bulldogs fall into a three-way tie for sixth place in the conference standings with Missouri Western and Central Missouri at 9-9, just one game ahead of ninth place Fort Hays State at 8-10.

Schultz's 19 was complimented by Cassie Lombardino's 17 and Laura Kinderknect's 11 as the Lady Blues stayed one game back of Northwest Missouri for the conference lead

Truman will head to conference leader Northwest for a Wednesday night battle with the Bearcats. The last two meetings with Northwest needed overtime for the outcome to be decided including a double-overtime affair back on Jan. 8th that saw the Bearcats eek out a 73-72 victory in Pershing Arena.
