Bulldogs Match Longest Winning Streak In School History

KANSAS CITY – William Jewell (Mo.) led for over 80% of the game but the Truman women's basketball team outscored the Cardinals 14-5 over the final five minutes to pick up their seventh straight Great Lakes Valley Conference victory 83-75 on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Cardinals (8-9; 3-6 GLVC) scored the first six points of the game and carried two 10-point leads in the period over the red-hot Bulldogs (13-4; 7-2 GLVC) before Truman trimmed the lead to one at the break, 30-29.
 
The scoring pace picked up in the second half and Truman grabbed their first lead on a basket by Bianca Szafarowicz within the first minute of play. The Cardinals snatched the lead right back on their next possession and held the Bulldogs at bay for the next 12-plus minutes until Szafarowicz pushed in her 18th point of the game to give Truman a 67-66 lead at the 6:42 mark.
 
The teams traded the lead over the next minute and a half before Courtney Strait buried a triple to put Truman back on top 72-70 and Nicole Gloor added a bucket for a four-point lead. The Bulldogs held the Cardinals to just five points over the final five minutes while scoring their final 11 points from the foul line to finish with 25-of-32 made from the charity stripe.
 
The Bulldogs rebounded from woeful shooting (32%) in the first half by making 16-of-28 (57%) and seven of 10 from beyond the arc in the second half. Five players finished in double figures with Allie Norton's 21 and Szafarowicz's career high of 19 adding 10 rebounds and six assists. Amy Briggs finished with 16, Strait finished with 14 and Gloor a dozen. That group accounted for 82 of the team's 83 points.
 
The Cardinals were paced by Chelsea Meeks' 22 points. William Jewell shot 50% from the field, 44% from the arc and made all 11 free throws however were outrebounded 37-27 by the Bulldogs.
 
Head coach Amy Eagan set a new benchmark with 13 wins by a first-year Truman coach. Lois Heeren's 1989-90 Bulldogs won 12 games in her first season. In addition, the seven-game win streak matched the program's longest such streak that occurred on three difference occasions (1990-91, 1998-99, and 2001-02). It is the first seven-game conference winning streak in school history.
 
The Bulldogs will look for their eighth straight victory on Thursday night when they kick off an important four-game homestand with a visit by the Missouri S&T Miners at 5:30 p.m.
