Women's Soccer Recap: Truman 3, Saint Joseph's 1

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - The Truman women's soccer team opened Homecoming weekend with a 3-1 win against Saint Joseph's (Ind.) College at the Bulldog Soccer Park on Friday afternoon. Melanie Hunt had a goal and an assist, while Alexis Heffernan and Megan Frkovic also scored.
 
The Bulldogs (9-2-1, 7-1-1 GLVC) got on the board against the visiting Pumas (1-9-2, 0-7-2 GLVC) in just the 10th minute, when Hunt flicked home a centering pass by Allison Lockett for a 1-0 lead.
 
It took until after the intermission before Truman would strike again, as Hunt sent a corner kick into the middle of the six-yard box. Caitlyn Stephan got a touch on to Heffernan, who slotted home her GLVC-leading eighth goal of the season in the 59th minute for a 2-0 lead.
 
A flurry of action commenced in the 77th minute, as Saint Joseph's would momentarily cut Truman's lead in half, as Kate Hickner turned and fired her first goal of the season off a Sarah Emerson free kick. However, just 23 seconds later, Frkovic completed a Tori Owens pass to push the purple and white back up 3-1.
 
Both Heffernan and Stephan took four shots, while Katie Mattingly surrendered just the one tally in 90 minutes in net. She made two saves on the day.
 
Truman out-shot SJC 16-7 and took seven corner kicks to the Pumas' one.
 
The Bulldogs return to action on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m., hosting Indianapolis (3-6-3, 2-4-3 GLVC) at the Bulldog Soccer Park. Truman will recognize its four seniors – Lauren Seawright, Sara Bommarito, Hunt, and Owens prior to kickoff.
