Box Score (PDF)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Senior guard Reed Mells scored 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds, as the Truman men's basketball team took an early lead and never looked back in a season-opening 82-65 victory against Lake Superior (Mich.) State on Friday night in the 2014-15 season opener at the Midwest Challenge.

The Bulldogs (1-0) scored the game's first six points, as Mells put in buckets surrounding a Seth Jackson lay-up to put Truman on top early. After the Lakers (0-1) scored seven in a row to take a lead, a pair of Mells free throws and an Isaac Gardner three-ball gave Truman what would be the lead for good at 11-7 with 13:36 to play in the opening half.

Truman would stretch the lead to 14 on another  Gardner triple at the 9:39 mark, before a three-pointer by Andrew Vander Zwaag and another Mells lay-up extended the margin to 32-15 with 5:15 to play in the first.

LSSU would make things interesting early in the second half, pulling to within six with 15:09 still to play; however, a quick 9-0 burst by the Bulldogs pushed the lead back to 15 at 51-36. It would never fall below double-figures again, as the Bulldogs led by as many as 19 before finishing off the 82-65 win.

The Bulldogs shot 53% from the floor for the game, including 10-for-22 (45.5%) from three-point range, against an NCAA Div. II tournament squad from a year ago. Truman also hit 20-of-28 (71.4%) of its free throw opportunities and turned 16 LSSU miscues into 20 points on the offensive end.

Mells hit 10-of-17 shots from the floor en route to his game-high 25 points, while both Gardner (11) and junior Cole Myers (11) also hit double-figures offensively. Jackson finished with nine points and three rebounds, while sophomore Cory Myers led the squad with three assists.

With the victory, head coach Chris Foster also earned his first collegiate victory, as he took control of the program this past offseason.

Alex Williams scored 18 points to lead the Lakers, while Devin Daly added a 15 point, 13 rebound double-double.

The Bulldogs return to the floor on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m., facing the host Trevecca Nazarene Trojans. TNU fell to GLVC-foe Maryville 75-68 on Friday night.
