Box Score (PDF)

ABERDEEN, S.D. - - The Truman State University men's basketball team held a lead for more than 32 of the 45 minutes during Sunday afternoon's road contest at Northern (S.D.) State, but a buzzer-beating three-pointer at the end of regulation and a last-second lay-up in overtime was just enough for the home Wolves, as NSU dealt the Bulldogs a 76-74 defeat in Wachs Arena.

Truman (1-2) led by as many as 11 in the second half, before NSU (4-0) slowly began to chip away – eventually drawing even with 7:05 to play in the ball game at 52-52. From  there, neither team led by more than two, until the first of two free throws by Reed Mells with 10 seconds to play put Truman on top, 65-62. Mells would miss the second, and on the ensuing possession, NSU's Tydan Storrusten drained a contested three-pointer just before the horn sounded to send the game to overtime.

In the extra frame, the Wolves would go up by three with 3:47 left, before a Seth Jackson bucket and two Mells free throws put Truman back on top, 72-71, with 2:15 on the clock. NSU would get three more free throws in the next two minutes to get a 74-72 lead, before Mells drove to the bucket uncontested with 11 seconds left to knot the game at 74-74.

NSU's Darin Peterka then came through with a go-ahead lay-up with three seconds left, and a Patrick Burmester triple from distance hit the back iron as time expired to allow NSU to slip away with the victory.

Jackson led all players with a career-high 29 points, hitting 9-of-19 field goals (1-for-3 three-point) and 10-of-14 free throws to go alongside four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Mells added 12 points on 4-of-12 shooting (1-for-2 three-point; 3-for-5 free throws), while Burmester scored eight points. Andrew Vander Zwaag led all Bulldogs with seven rebounds, while Billy Daniel posted both of Truman's blocks on the night.

"It was a tough loss, but I am very proud with the way our team competed tonight," head coach Chris Foster said. "I give a lot of credit to Northern State for making some big plays at the end of regulation."

Truman shot 42.1% from the floor but hit just 5-of-19 (26.3%) from three-point range. The Bulldogs went 21-for-32 (65.6%) from the charity stripe and racked up eight steals.

NSU, meanwhile, shot 42.6% overall (8-of-15 from three-point range), and converted on 22-of-30 (73.3%) of its free throw tries. The Wolves out-rebounded Truman by two, 38-36, but turned the ball over 14 times to Truman's 11.

"We have a very resilient group of guys, and I look forward to getting back on the practice floor in preparation of next weekend's trip," Foster said.

The Bulldogs return to action next Friday (Nov. 28) in Owensboro, Ky., at the KWC Thanksgiving Classic against North Alabama. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. and can be heard on 104.7 KRES or www.centralmoinfo.com.
