WBB Notes: Bulldogs Head To #18 Missouri Southern Monday

Game Preview:
The Truman Women's Basketball team will face their third ranked opponent of the season when they travel to Joplin, Missouri to renew a rivalry with Missouri Southern State University. The 18th-ranked Lions are 8-0 on the young season and entered the poll for the first time since the 2007-08 season. The Bulldogs 5-2 overall both losses coming against top 10 ranked teams.
 
Truman rolled to a 75-65 victory in their Great Lakes Valley Conference opener against Quincy (Ill.) University in their last time out. The Bulldogs trailed by six at half but shot 55% in the final 20 minutes and outscored the Lady Hawks 44-28 en route to the win. Six Bulldogs scored in double-figures led by Allie Norton's 16 points and Rachel Steinhoff's 12.
 
Norton leads the Bulldogs in scoring at 14.3 points per game and shoots 45% from beyond the arc and is joined in double-figure scoring by Courtney Strait (13.7 ppg) and Michalina Tomczak (10.3 ppg).  Tomczak and Strait average over six rebounds per game and as a team, Truman has a +8.4 rebounds per game than their opponents.
 
In team statistics, Truman shoots 45% from the field, 38% from beyond the arc and 77% at the foul line. The Bulldogs has averaged 70.9 points per game but has allowed 68.3. Opponents have shot 43% overall, 33% from the arc and 81% at the line against the 'Dogs.
 
Missouri Southern is fresh off an upset over then #7 Washburn (Kan.) University in their last time out by a 66-62 score in Topeka on December 6. The Lions are led by post Sharese Jones, who averages 15.0 points per game and shoots 61% from the field while also pulling down seven rebounds per game. Nicole Hartzog averages 12.5 points per night with a team-leading 20 steals and a 91% free throw shooting mark.
 
The Lions have outscored opponents by nearly 30 points per game this season. They have averaged 77.6 offensively and allowed just 49.0 defensively in their first eight games. They have defeated GLVC members Rockhurst (69-40 on November 15) and Quincy (56-49 on November 22) and have MIAA victories against Nebraska-Kearney (92-64 on December 4) and Washburn (66-62 on December 6).
 
Series History w/Missouri Southern:
In the 44 previous games played between the Bulldogs and Lions, each school has won 22. Truman has won five of the last six games against the Lions dating back to 2010. Truman won 72-62 in their last meeting on December 8, 2012 and 63-55 in their last visit to Joplin on November 30, 2011.

About Culver-Stockton/Series History:
The Bulldogs will wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule with a home date against Culver-Stockton (Mo.) College on Saturday, December 20. The Wildcats are 7-3 overall and will play games against Missouri S&T on December 13 and Greenville (Ill.) College on December 18 prior to the visit to Pershing Arena.

Culver-Stockton is led by Randi Lee Plunkett (11.4 ppg) and Jasmine Matthews (11.0 ppg). The Wildcats have averaged 74.6 points per game while allowing 63.2. They have shot 43% overall, 33% from the arc and 65% at the foul line.

Truman is 15-8 all-time against the fellow Northeast Missouri school located 60 miles away in Canton.  However, the last game played between the two schools was November 30, 1999 when Truman won 90-54. The Wildcats last victory was in 1995 in Kirksville when they pulled out a 78-71 win.

Head Coach Amy Eagan:
All-American and Bulldog Athletics Hall of Fame member Amy Eagan is in her second season on the bench for Truman and her seventh season as a head coach. She is 102-91 in those seven seasons after a 22-9 campaign returning to her alma mater. The Bulldogs returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 1999 season and won the GLVC Tournament Championship.

Norton Moving Up Charts:
Allie Norton became the 19th Truman player to join the 1,000 point club earlier this season (1,033) and is third in career three-point shooting at Truman with 222 made. She is eight back from second all-time (Candace McGee). Norton is moving up the career assists charts and sits ninth all-time with 258. She is tied for fifth in games played with 92.

Norton is the career-active leader in Division II in three-point shooting at 43.3% and is second among all three NCAA Divisions. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis from UConn t is the active three-point leader at 44.2%.
She is second in Division II, 12th overall in three-pointers made and fifth (DII) 17th overall in three-pointers made per game (2.41).

Tip Ins:
  • The Bulldogs are 63-29 (.685) over the past four seasons, 36-21 (.632) in league games and 34-7 (.829) in games played in Pershing Arena during that span.
  • Truman finished fifth in the final Division II national rankings in free throw percentage last season (77.9%) and was fourth nationally in three-point field goal percentage (39.0%) and turnovers per game (12.2/g).
  • This season, Truman is second in Division II in personal fouls per game (12.3/game) and 11th nationally in free throw shooting percentage (77.8%).
  • Truman is averaging 7.7 three-pointers made per game.
  • The Bulldogs have used the same starting lineup for all seven games played this season. Allie Norton, Courtney Strait, Michalina Tomczak have been joined by redshirt freshman Ashley Hartwig and true freshman Rachel Steinhoff.
  • Senior Allison Weise, junior Sarah Gaeddert and redshirt freshman McKenzie Russell have appeared off the bench in all seven games played.
  • Off the court, Truman had three players, Michalina Tomczak, Nicole Gloor and Tawny Tucci, earn Academic All-GLVC.
 
GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll: The Truman Women's Basketball team was picked fourth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division in the preseason coaches' poll and picked up two of the available 16 first-place votes. Quincy was picked second with 94 points and one first place vote.
 
Drury (Mo.) University nabbed 12 first-place votes in the West and earned 115 points to sit atop the division while Lewis (Ill.) University garnered 13 first-place votes and 118 overall to sit atop the East.
 
Up Next:  The Bulldogs will bring in the New Year by hosting a pair of GLVC East Division teams. Wisconsin-Parkside will be the opponent on January 2 while the current second-ranked team in Division II, Lewis (Ill.) University will make their Pershing Arena debut on Sunday, January 4.
