#18 Missouri Southern State University 64 (8-1)

KIRKSVILLE, Mo.  – The Truman Women's Basketball team knocked off previously undefeated and #18th ranked Missouri Southern State University 67-64 on the road Monday night.  The Bulldogs will wrap up the non-conference season on Saturday night hosting Culver-Stockton (Mo.) College at 7:00 p.m.

Ashley Hartwig tied the game at 64 apiece with less than a minute to play then Rachel Steinhoff got a steal and following a timeout, Courtney Strait buried the go-ahead jumper with 16 seconds remaining.

The Lions tried for a three-pointer for the lead but Jenson Maydew's attempt was off the mark, rebounded by Michalina Tomczak and she converted an insurance free throw with five seconds left. The Lions were forced to go the length of the court to tie. Alexis Fitzpatrick missed on the three-pointer giving Truman their first win against a ranked opponent in three tries this season.

For Missouri Southern, it was their first defeat of the season and most points allowed in a game thus far after holding opponents to under 50 points through the first eight games.

Truman led by as many as nine points midway through the first period. Allie Norton scored nine of her game-high 19 in the first. Norton dropped in three triples and was 8-of-16 on the night while grabbing six rebounds and adding two steals.

MSSU whittled the lead away and closed to two just before the break on a Maydew three-pointer to make the score 30-28 in favor of the 'Dogs.

The final 20 minutes was a see-saw affair with nine lead changes and seven ties. Maydew's basket at the 15:53 mark gave the Lions the lead at 40-36 but Norton's three-pointer keyed a 9-0 run to put Truman ahead 45-40.

Southern responded with under seven minutes to play with their own 9-0 run jumpstarted by a three from Shawnee Phillips.

Strait ended the nearly four minute scoring drought by Truman after converting a Tomczak block and rebound into a jumper on the other end of the court. She tied the game at 62 with a pair of free throws with 1:43 left and after Nicole Hartzog made her free throws to put the Lions up 64-62, Truman would score the final five points to pick up the first road win over a ranked opponent since 2011.

Norton was joined in double-figures by Strait's 11and Hartwig's 10. The Bulldogs shot 50% for the game but made five three pointers and shot an uncharacteristic 57% (8-of-14) from the foul line. Truman scored 30 points in the paint and committed 12 turnovers to the Lions' 16.

Jones led Southern with 14 points but she was the only Lions' player in double figures. Southern shot 41% for the game, was 6-of-15 from three and made 12-of-14 free throw attempts. The Lions won the glass 34-28.

Truman's last win over a ranked opponent came last season when they defeated #16th ranked Quincy at home 70-59 and last road win over a ranked opponent was December 10, 2011 in Topeka, Kansas against #15th ranked Washburn 68-66.
