KIRKSVILLE, Mo.  – Six Bulldog players scored in double figures and the Truman Women's Basketball team overcame a six-point halftime deficit to down rival Quincy (Ill.) University 75-65 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener on Saturday afternoon in Pershing Arena.

Kara Gerbus got the Lady Hawks off to a fast start scoring the team's first 10 points of the game. She connected on five of six shots but was then held to just four points the remainder of the contest.

An 8-0 run by the Bulldogs gave them their first lead of the game at 23-19 but the Lady Hawks responded with seven straight for a 32-28 advantage and took a 37-31 halftime lead into the locker room.

Quincy extended their lead to eight points but Allie Norton rained in a triple followed by baskets from Kasey Gassensmith and Ashley Hartwig pulled Truman to within one at 41-40 forcing a Quincy timeout at 16:21 left in the game.

Norton's third triple of the game tied the score at 43 but was answered on the other end by Tori Kuhn, who hit her first three-pointer of the season to put Quincy back in front 46-43.

Two minutes later, freshman Rachel Steinhoff made buckets on consecutive trips to give the Bulldogs a lead they would not give up the rest of the game.

Quincy clawed to within one point on two separate occasions only to see Hartwig come up with big plays and baskets on ensuing possessions. Hartwig scored all 10 of her points in the second half and added five rebounds with three on the offensive glass.

Steinhoff scored 10 of her 12 points in the final 20 minutes and gave the Bulldogs their first double digit lead with 1:39 left to play.

Norton led all Truman scoring with 16 points in 38 minutes played with Courtney Strait added 10 points and eight rebounds. Allison Weise and Michalina Tomczak also scored 10 points apiece.

The Bulldogs shot 55% in the second half and 50% for the game while winning the boards by a 31-21 advantage.

Maggie Cunninham led Quincy with 15 points with Gerbus following with 14 and five boards.

Truman will take next week off for final exams before heading to Missouri Southern on Monday, December 15 for a non-conference game with the Lions.
