Tritons Hold On To Down Bulldogs 80-76

Highlight: Alyssa Like's basket with 38 seconds left stopped a 9-0 Truman run and allowed the Tritons to hold off the Bulldogs in a battle for fourth place in the GLVC.
 
ST. LOUIS – The Missouri-St. Louis Tritons dealt the Bulldog women their second straight defeat as UMSL held on for an 80-76 win on Saturday evening in St. Louis. The game featured eight ties and 16 lead changes.
 
Truman lost a pair of starters in the first half due to injuries but still took their largest lead of the game at 49-41 early in the second half. The Tritons reeled the Bulldogs back in and then went on a 17-2 spurt to lead by 10 with 2:51 to play.
 
The Bulldogs battled back with nine straight of their own and closed to within one at 77-76 following a pair of free throws by Courtney Strait. Alyssa Like made a basket with 38 seconds showing to push the lead to three but Truman missed on a pair of chances on the offensive end to tie and Jessica Zavoral sealed the victory with a free throw with seven seconds left.
 
Amy Briggs led Truman with 24 points on 5-of-9 shooting from outside while playing 38 minutes, the most in a regulation game this semester. Strait played a season-high 36 minutes draining a pair of triples for 15 points. The Bulldogs made seven three-pointers on the night to set the single-season record for triples with 203, surpassing last season's total of 202.
 
Four Tritons finished in double-figures led by Hazaria Washington's 16 on 8-of-10 shooting. Devonna Smith added 14, Zavoral 13 and Kelly McGovern finished with 12.
 
Truman did outrebound the league's top rebounding team 30-22 but had five more turnovers and were outscored in the paint 46-30.
 
With Indianapolis' win over Bellarmine (Ky.) on Saturday, Truman secured at least a home game for the first round of the Deaconess GLVC Postseason Tournament with one regular season game left. Truman will host rival Quincy (Ill.) on Thursday night as both teams lost this weekend's swing against Maryville and UMSL.
