KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Devonte Black completed 21-of-27 passes for a career-high 216 yards with two touchdowns and Garrett White added two more rushing TDs as the Truman Bulldogs defeated the Lincoln (Mo.) Blue Tigers 29-20 on Saturday night.

Black connected with Joey Schenck on a 20-yard touchdown pass after the Bulldogs converted the first of three interceptions into points. Black later hit Vince Garcia on a well-designed screen pass midway through the third quarter for what proved to be the 28-yard game clinching score.

White clearly won the battle between two of the top Great Lakes Valley Conference's running backs. White rushed 22 times for 112 yards and touchdowns of one and two yards while averaging 5.1 yards per carry. Morris Henderson, Lincoln's All-American back, was held to 29 yards on 19 carries and no scores. Henderson was averaging six yards per carry entering the night but Truman's defense kept him to 1.5 yards per rush.

The Bulldogs held onto the ball for nearly 40 minutes with a season-high 454 yards of total offense and a 5.7 yards per play mark. In addition to White's 112 yards, Black gained 71 on the ground including a long of 20 with Garcia adding 32 on nine carries. As a team, Truman rushed for 238 yards.

Schenck led the receiving corps with five catches for 64 yards. Chico Orlando caught four passes for 34 and Derek Hammann, Felix Neboh and Jared Haferbier added three receptions apiece.

Lincoln took the opening kickoff and marched down to the Bulldog 11 before the first of 21 flags against both teams flew. The minor false start foul backed them up five yards and on third and 13, Owen Jordan had his pass picked off by Austin Zoda at the Truman seven.

White gained 18 yards to move the ball into Lincoln territory and on the next play Black raced 17 down to the 23. Facing a third and seven, Black threw to the near sideline where Schenck grabbed the ball and held on as he fell into the endzone for the 7-0 lead.

Ben Chaney picked off Owen on third and 10 early in the second quarter and returned the ball out to the 38. White and Garcia chewed up 30 yards on three consecutive runs and with the ball at the one, White took it in with the extra point blocked for a 13-0 Truman lead.

Lincoln closed the gap just before half as Owen scored on a plunge from a yard away with Andrew Fishel adding the point-after for a 13-7 Truman lead.

Truman took the first possession of the second half in for a score with White scoring from two yards away. The play was set up with Black completing a pass to Hammann for 16 yards on second and 13. The PAT was blocked again making it 19-7 at the 9:16 mark of the third quarter.

The defense held for a three and out and Truman took over on their own 28 in their next possession. Black connected with Schenck for 18 yards and White gained 11 on the ground moving the ball into Lincoln territory. On second and six, Black lofted a swing pass to Garcia on the right side who then raced 28 yards into the endzone for his first collegiate touchdown.

Lincoln crawled back as they turned a Truman fumble into points. Following the turnover that set up the Blue Tigers at Truman's 25, Bryson Winfrey took the lateral from Owen and found a wide open Khiry Draine in the endzone for the touchdown to make it 26-14.

The Bulldogs responded, aided by 30 yards of penalties, with a 21-yard field goal by Howard to increase Truman's lead to 29-14 with 7:34 showing.

Both teams turned the ball over on downs in their next two possessions.

Later, Jordan found Quan Guion for a 20-yard touchdown and could have made it a one-touchdown game but the extra point was mishandled and missed so the Bulldogs led 29-20 with just over two minutes to play.

The defense held and Truman moved to 2-0 in conference play with the victory.

The game was marred by a combine 233 yards of penalties.

Truman will head to McKendree (Ill.) University next Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. conference game. The Bearcats lost 35-33 to Saint Joseph's (Ind.) in their GLVC opener.
