LEBANON, Ill. –
Garrett White rushed for a career-high 159 yards and three touchdowns while the Bulldog defense held McKendree to just three points on three trips inside the Bulldog 10-yard line in Truman's 30-17 win over the Bearcats on Saturday afternoon.
The win improved the Bulldogs to 3-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and 4-1 overall.
White surpassed his previous high by just a single yard while moving into the Bulldog top 10 in career rushing yards with 2,305 and tying Bulldog great Lenvil Elliott with 28 rushing touchdowns, good for sixth in Truman history.
He scored his first of three on a 5-yard run to answer McKendree after they took a 7-0 lead on a Cameron James' 23-yard pass reception from Isaac Fisher. On the ensuing drive, White caught a swing pass from
Devonte Black for 39 yards down to the Bearcats' five and went into the endzone on the next play tying the game at seven in the first quarter.
Ben Chaney jumped on a fumble by McKendree later in the period and Black wasted little time in hooking up with
Kurt Loyd on a 20-yard strike and a 13-7 lead however the point after was blocked.
McKendree's redzone problems started in the second quarter. A fumble by Black set up the Bearcats at Truman's 14. The defense yielded seven yards after an incomplete pass on third down so the Bearcats brought on the field goal unit. With the wind at their back, McKendree tried to fool the Bulldogs with a fake but Fisher's shuffle pass from the holders' position fell incomplete.
Later in the second, the Bearcats sustained a 13-play drive down to the Truman two but
Brian Craft sacked Fisher on third down for a loss of five. Steven O'Block's 24-yard attempt flew right of the posts and McKendree came up empty again.
The Bulldogs gave the Bearcats yet another short field after a second fumble on the very next play from scrimmage. McKendree moved inside the 10 to the eight but three straight incompletes brought O'Block out again for a 25-yard attempt that was good to cut Truman's lead to 13-10 at the half.
Truman had the second half choice and promptly took control of the game. Black found Loyd for 12-yards and a first down while facing a third and eight and on the next play White went up the middle for a 45-yard touchdown run to give Truman a 10-point advantage.
The defense forced a three and out and White broke another long run for 24-yards on third and one that eventually set up a 36-yard field goal by
Roger Howard and a 21-10 lead midway through the third quarter.
White tacked on his third TD on fourth and goal from the one.
Vince Garcia caught a swing pass from Black to take the ball down to the three and following a timeout to set up the fourth down play. White powered his way into the endzone for the insurance score.
McKendree would add a four-yard touchdown by Ryan Herring with just over six minutes left but that would be as close as they could get as the Bearcats turned the ball over on downs and
Matthew Guignon recovered a fumble to end the final threat.
The Bearcats outgained the Bulldogs 414 to 377 but went 2-for-6 in the redzone while Truman converted with scores on each of their four trips. The Bulldogs rushed for 196 yards as a team and Black completed 14-of-19 passes for 181 yards.
Fisher was the workhorse for the Bearcats with 18 rushes for 87 yards and added 279 yards through the air on 27 completions.
The Bulldogs will bring the perfect 3-0 GLVC mark back to Stokes Stadium for two straight games. They will host William Jewell (Mo.) for Homecoming on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. followed by a visit from the two-time defending league champion, University of Indianapolis on October 18.
