KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - The Truman men's basketball team cut a 26-point deficit down to just four with less than two minutes to play, but the 23rd-ranked Lewis Flyers were able to ice the game away from the foul line and hold off the Bulldogs by a 74-64 score on Sunday afternoon in Pershing Arena.

The Bulldogs (9-4, 1-2 GLVC) trailed Lewis (10-1, 2-0 GLVC) by just one at 19-18 after a Cole Myers three-pointer with 9:52 to play in the opening half; however, after a nearly seven-minute stretch with no made field goals, Truman found itself down 38-19 with 3:20 to go in the opening frame. A Ryan Jackson three-pointer at the buzzer sent the visiting Flyers into the break on top, 44-24.

The lead was 26 – matching the highest of the day – for Lewis with 15:44 to go, before the Bulldogs began to chip away. Five straight three-pointers by Truman sparked a 15-1 run that cut the deficit to 53-41 with 12 minutes to play, but it took four more minutes for Lewis' lead to drop to single-digits, as Andrew Vander Zwaag laid in a fast-break lay-up with 8:10 to play and Truman down 62-53.

A Patrick Burmester three-pointer pulled the Bulldogs to within four at 66-62 with 3:33 left on the clock, but a miss on the Bulldogs' next possession led to a Lewis jumper with 2:12 to play. The Bulldogs got two Cory Myers free throws on their next trip, but the squad missed their final three attempts from the field with Lewis countering with a perfect 6-for-6 mark from the free throw line – including four in a row with 37 seconds to play.

Seth Jackson led Truman with 18 points – 11 coming in the second half – while Cole Myers (13) and Cory Myers (11) each finished in double-figures. Vander Zwaag added seven points, and Connor Erickson chipped in six points, while Reed Mells finished with nine assists. Jackson led the Bulldogs in both rebounding (six) and steals (four).

For the game, Truman shot 37% from the floor, including 10-for-28 (36%) from three-point range. The squad left a handful of points at the line, converting on just 10-of-17 (59%) of its tries and was out-rebounded by a longer Lewis squad 42-30. The Bulldogs did hand out 18 assists on 22 made baskets and added 11 steals on 13 Flyer turnovers.

Lewis shot 47% from the floor for the game and was led by Ryan Jackson's 22 points. Julian Lewis was the team's leading rebounder with 11.

The Bulldogs hit the road for a regular season game for the first time since late November this coming week, when the squad opens a three-game stretch away from Pershing Arena at McKendree on Thursday (January 8) at 7:30 p.m.
