Second Half Rally Sparks Women's Soccer Past Rockhurst

KIRKSVILLE - - A pair of second-half goals – each coming off a set piece – helped the Truman women's soccer team avoid a Friday home loss and pick up a 2-1 victory against Rockhurst at the Bulldog Soccer Park.

Quick Recap:
  • Final Score: Truman 2, Rockhurst 1
  • Records: Truman (6-1-3, 5-0-2 GLVC) || Rockhurst (2-3-4, 2-3-1 GLVC)
  • Scoring Summary: (41:19) – RU – OWN GOAL || (52:56) – TSU – Jessica Hanson (2) || (69:13) – TSU – Megan Casserly (1); assist: Megan Frkovic

Match Breakdown:
  • Each team took a bit to settle into a rhythm on Friday afternoon on a cooler day at the Bulldog Soccer Park, but it was Rockhurst who benefited first. A ball played across the Truman box was headed wide but accidentally touched in by a Bulldog defender, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead just three minutes before the half on an own goal.
  • However, the Bulldogs came out with a higher level of intensity in the second half and were rewarded early. Rockhurst committed a foul just 20-yards out straightaway on net, and senior Jessica Hanson took a solid strike off the free kick to even the match at 1-all.
  • Then, in the 70th minute, Truman earned a corner kick, and Megan Frkovic's cross in was corralled by Megan Casserly, who flicked a shot through a mess of bodies in the box and in for her first collegiate goal.
  • Truman kept the pressure up for the entire half, out-shooting RU 8-3 in the second 45 minutes (13-7 overall), to keep the Hawks from evening the score.
  • Katie Mattingly made two saves in goal, while both Hanson and Alexis Heffernan were credited with four shots each.

Extra Notes:
  • Hanson earned her second free kick goal of the season, having also come through with a game-tying goal at Lindenwood on Sept. 15.
  • Casserly scored her first collegiate goal in her 31st match, also earning her first two points as well.
  • The Bulldogs improved their second half output this season to eight goals, outscoring its opposition by a plus-five margin in the second half and OT.
  • Truman improved to 11-2-2 all-time against RU, including a now 2-1-1 record against the Hawks in four matches since joining the GLVC in 2013.

Up Next:
  • The Bulldogs will host William Jewell at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 4) afternoon to close the weekend. The Cardinals entered the weekend at 4-3-2 overall (2-3-1 GLVC) and faced nationally-ranked Quincy on Friday night before heading west to Kirksville for Sunday.
  • Emily Huyck (1998-2001) will go into the Truman Athletics Hall of Fame this weekend, with an on-field recognition set for 2:20 p.m. on Sunday prior to the team's match against William Jewell.
