Bulldogs Fend Off Jewell Behind Satulla's Four TDs

LIBERTY, Mo. – Freshman Andy Satulla has his second straight 100-yard rushing game and Joey Schenck caught 13 passes for 157 yards as the Truman Bulldogs won their third straight, a 40-28 victory over William Jewell (Mo.) College on Saturday afternoon on the road.

Satulla, the reigning Great Lakes Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week, carried the ball 31 times for 125 yards and scored four rushing touchdowns against the GLVC's second ranked rushing defense.

After the Bulldogs forced and recovered a fumble on special teams at the Cardinals' four, Satulla scored his first of the day on the next play from scrimmage to put Truman ahead 10-0.

Schenk caught a 15-yard pass from Randy Schroeder early in the second to make it 17-0.

WJC got their ariel attack going when Nick West hit Anthony Mullins for 64-yards to get on the scoreboard on the next drive.  The teams then exchanged touchdowns with Satulla scoring from a yard out with 6:57 left in the half and Mullins catching a 50-yard pass to trim the lead to 24-14.
The Cardinals crept closer just before half when Bulla Graft nabbed a 14-yard reception to make it a three-point Truman margin heading into the locker room.

The Bulldogs were able to put the hammer down in the second half. Satulla just broke the plane of the goal line from one yard out on fourth down to cap off a 15-play, 84-yard drive to start the third quarter. On that possession, Schroeder hit Schenck for a pair of circus-like catches for a dozen yards and Brass Woods for 17 to move the ball to the four.

Later, Nick Dolezal nailed a career-long 42-yard field goal to push Truman's lead to 34-21.

WJC would not go away as Trejaun Mask snared a 15-yard pass from West and scored with two minutes left in the third to pull Jewell back to within six. The Cardinals later forced a Bulldog punt and moved the ball down to the Truman 28.

West completed a pair of passes for a net one yard then threw an incomplete pass on third down. Jewell decided to go for it on fourth and nine and another pass fell to the turf giving the Bulldogs the turnover on downs with 7:30 remaining.

The Bulldogs were milked the clock as they converted on three third downs and moved the ball down the field. Following a Jewell timeout with two minutes left and facing a third and six, Satulla followed right tackle Brad Hardin to the boundary then broke free for a 36-yard touchdown run. It was the longest rush on the season for the Truman running back.

Satulla's four rushing TDs are the most by a Bulldog since Jarrett Anderson set a school-record six in 1996 against Emporia (Kan.) State.
Truman finished with 409 yards of total offense with 151 on the ground and 258 through the air. Schenk had 13 receptions for a career-high 157 yards and the Bulldogs were 11-of-20 on third down with over 35 minutes of possession time.

Game Notes:
  • Randy Schroeder set season highs with 24 completions on 38 attempts for and threw for 258 yards. He had one interception and one touchdown pass (Joey Schenck).
  • Nick West threw for 393 yards and had four touchdown passes going 32-of-52 on the day.
  • Anthony Mullins caught nine passes for 188 yards and touchdown receptions of 64 and 50 yards in the second quarter.
  • The Bulldogs topped 400 yards of total offense for the second time in three games. Prior to this, they had over 400 yards twice in the last 12 games.
  • Truman's rushing defense numbers will continue to move up the national rankings. The 'Dogs held the Cardinals to 35 total rushing yards on 14 carries.  Truman was 39th in Division II entering the week allowing 126 per game.
  • Justin Mikeworth had the fumble recovery on special teams for the Bulldogs and Austin Zoda had his second interception of the season and fifth for his career.
  • The Bulldog place kickers remained perfect in field goal attempts this season with Nick Dolezal hitting from 38 and 42 yards. Both were collegiate longs. Truman is now 10-for-10 on field goals this season.
  • The 42-yard field goal broke an 0-for-5 Truman streak on field goals outside of 40 yards. The last one was by Derek Koon in 2013 against Grand Valley (Mich.) State (43-yards).
  • Derek Hammann had a season-long 21 yard punt return and Felix Neboh had his best kick return of the year at 29 yards.
  • Neboh added five catches for 54 yards and finished with 114 all-purpose yards on the day.
  • The Bulldogs never trailed and have won three straight games to even their overall record to 4-4 on the season and 3-2 in the GLVC.

Up Next:
The final road trip of the season will also be the shortest as the 'Dogs travel east to Quincy, Illinois for a showdown with the Quincy University Hawks.

Truman has won the last two conference games against Quincy and four overall including last season's 17-14 win in Kirksville.

The Hawks were downed at home 73-28 in a non-conference game against Ohio Dominican on Saturday afternoon.

Kickoff is scheduled for 11:07 a.m. from the newly refurbished  QU Stadium. In addition to the radio coverage, the game has been selected as part of the NCAA Division II Showcase and will be televised nationally on the American Sports Network and NCAA.com. It can be seen locally in Kirksville on KTVO CBS 3.2.
