HONOLULU – The Truman Women's Basketball team was outscored 20-14 in the final quarter and lost to Hawaii Pacific 58-51 in the opening game of the Oahu Christmas Classic on Thursday. Rachel Steinhoff scored in double figures for the third straight game leading Truman with 12 points.
 
The Bulldogs led 20-16 after one and had an eight-point lead at 24-16 after the first two baskets, one by Steinhoff and another by Cassidy Clark to start quarter number two.
 
The Sharks scored 10 straight as Truman went cold from the field. After Clark's field goal at the 8:21 mark of the quarter, Truman didn't hit a shot until Steinhoff's three-pointer with 54 seconds remaining in the half. HPU answered that triple with a three-pointer by Spencer Gray to lead 31-28.
 
Steinhoff completed a three-point play and Ashley Hartwig put the Bulldogs back in front 37-35 but a three-point trip from Breanna Mackenzie sent the Sharks into the fourth quarter holding a one-point advantage. HPU scored seven of the first nine points in the final quarter but Truman clawed back on consecutive hoops by Steinhoff and Courtney Strait to trim the lead back to one at the midway point.
 
Cece Pearl made one of two free throws and Brianne Yasukochi knocked down a key triple with 4:10 left to give the Sharks some insurance.
 
Truman made it a one possession game at 54-51 following Michalina Tomczak's basket but HPU would convert on all four free throw attempts to seal the win.
 
Steinoff scored 12 points on 5-of-16 shooting and Strait added 11. The Bulldogs shot 32% from the field with three, three-pointers.
 
Hawaii Pacific shot 38% from the field while outscoring the Bulldogs by seven at the free throw line. The Sharks made 15-of-18 attempts from the line.Pearl led HPU with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
 
The Bulldogs return to action on Friday against Southern Wesleyan (S.C).
