Women Bounce Back With Road Win Over Jewell

Box Score (HTML)

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Brooke Bailey's buzzer-beater at the end of the third quarter stopped William Jewell's momentum in its tracks and the Truman defense clamped down in the fourth quarter to defeat the Cardinals 61-54 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game on Saturday.

Rachel Steinhoff scored nine in the first half and Truman (6-3, 1-1 GLVC) led by four after one and seven at the halftime break. The lead grew to a dozen on back to back hoops Cassidy Clark and again on free throws by Bailey.

Jewell (4-7, 0-2 GLVC) began a three-point barrage with three straight and two from Adriana Rodriguez to cut the Truman lead all the way down to three at 47-44. On the inbounds and with time running out, Bailey heaved a shot just inside the halfcourt line that banked in to restore the momentum to Truman.

Courtney Strait started the fourth quarter with her second triple of the game and the Bulldogs had a nine-point cushion back.

Both teams would go scoreless for the next four minutes until Madison Campbell and Megan Paul converted two straight Truman turnovers into points and cut the deficit to five with 5:33 left.

Strait ended a six-minute plus scoring drought on the Truman side with a make at the 3:15 mark to push the lead back to seven. Truman would get their remaining points from the free throw line while Jewell finished the game going 2-for-10 from the floor with three turnovers.

Game high honors went to Strait with 16 points while Steinhoff added 14 and Michalina Tomczak added 10. Tomczak also had nine rebounds and four blocked shots. The Bulldogs shot 39% overall and converted on 16-of-22 free throw attempts. Bailey had nine points as she earned her first collegiate start.

Blair Klostermann led Jewell with 15 points as the Cardinals shot 32.8% from the field and made eight of 10 free throw attempts.

Truman will take finals week off before hosting the Quincy Hawks on Monday, December 14 at 5:30 p.m.
