MBB Recap: Truman 103, Quincy 85

QUINCY, Ill. - - A 19-0 run early in the game sparked the Truman men's basketball team to a 103-85 win in the regular season finale on Thursday night, as the Bulldogs led nearly wire-to-wire at Quincy (Ill.) University.

With the win, Truman (19-9, 11-7 GLVC) earned the No. 7 seed for the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament, setting up a first-round re-match with QU (13-15, 7-11 GLVC) in Pershing Arena on Sunday (March 1) at 3 p.m. The Hawks earned the No. 10 seed to pair the two programs against each other less than 66 hours following the conclusion of Thursday night's battle in Quincy.

The Bulldogs turned an 11-7 deficit into a 26-11 lead with 11:36 to go in the first half, thanks to a 19-0 blast that saw QU commit 11 turnovers in the first 9-plus minutes of the basketball game. Truman converted those miscues into 20 points on the offensive end, as senior guard Isaac Gardner drained five first-half three-pointers and added a free throw for 16 points in the first 20 minutes. The Bulldogs put up 52 in the first half and carried an 18-point lead into the break.

Both teams scored 51 points in a free-flowing second-half, as Truman was content to trade baskets and keep the clock running against Quincy on the Hawks' Senior Night. The Bulldogs topped the century mark for the fourth time this season and ran its winning streak against QU to five, dating back to 2012.

Gardner finished the night with 23 points to lead all players in scoring, while Seth Jackson (19 points in 23 minutes), Connor Erickson (career-high 18 points) and Cole Myers (career-high 14 points) also finished in double-figures for the Bulldog offense. Truman shot 51.5% from the field for the game and drilled 13 three-pointers (shooting 50%), with Gardner's six triples pacing the field.

Kyle Kanaskie finished with seven points and seven assists with no turnovers off the bench, while Reed Mells posted a well-rounded seven points, five assists, four rebounds, and three steals. Billy Daniel led Truman with two blocks off the bench to go alongside his five points and five rebounds, as the purple and white out-rebounded QU 38-35.

The Bulldogs also finished with 22 assists on its 35 made baskets and committed just nine turnovers, improving on its GLVC-leading assist-to-turnover ratio.

Ja'mil Jones (21) and Scott Bruxvoort (19) led QU in scoring, as the Hawks shot 49% from the field, including 9-of-21 from three-point range.
