Softball Grounds Flyers to Run Streak to Eight

KIRKSVILLE - - The Truman softball team ran its winning streak to eight, as the Bulldogs closed the opening weekend of Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a doubleheader sweep of Lewis (Ill.) University on Sunday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (12-4, 4-0 GLVC) capped a perfect weekend at home with two solid wins on Sunday against a pesky Flyers (11-8, 2-2 GLVC) squad that was coming off a sweep at Quincy on Saturday. Junior Whitney Richardson reached base five times with a pair of doubles, while senior Andrea Klipsch continued her hot streak with two home runs and a team-high five RBI. Juniors Kelsea Dorsey and Kindra Henze each went the distance in their respective starts to earn complete game victories as well.

Truman – finishing a whirlwind trek of 12 games in eight days – will take the upcoming week off before traveling to McKendree (Ill.) for a Saturday (March 21) twin-bill at 12 p.m. in Lebanon, Ill.

Game 1 (Truman 10-2, 6 inn.)
Three home runs – including two by Klipsch – helped Truman pick up a 10-2 run-rule victory against Lewis in the opener of Sunday's action, as the Bulldogs pounded out 10 hits in the rout.

The Bulldogs used some two-out magic in the second inning to get on the board, as freshman Jamie Fowle delivered with the bags loaded to plate two for a 2-0 lead. Then, Klipsch followed with a single of her own that scored freshman Alyssa Spoerer for a 3-0 edge.

After a two-run home run by Lewis' Kelsey Ullrich in the top of the third, Truman responded with an RBI double by senior Ally McReynolds in the bottom half to go back up by two.

Klipsch then homered to lead off the bottom of the fourth, before senior Liz Leath belted her sixth round-tripper of the year two batters later to push the lead to 6-2. Klipsch would add a two-out bomb in the bottom of the fifth for an 8-2 lead, before McReynolds put the finishing touch with a "walk-off" single in the home half of the sixth – bringing around pinch-runners sophomore Valerie Schmidt and freshman Riley Cook.

Klipsch finished the game 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI, while Fowle, McReynolds, and sophomore Lex Van Nostrand added two hits apiece. Dorsey ran her record to 7-1 with her five strikeout complete game. She surrendered just two earned runs and did not walk a batter in six innings of work.

Game 2 (Truman 4-2)
Some patient at-bats, fundamental softball, and timely hitting helped propel the Bulldogs to a 4-2 win in the nightcap, as Truman got just five hits but made the most of them to back Henze's fifth win of the season in the circle.

After Lewis jumped on top 1-0 in the top of the third, the Bulldogs manufactured two runs on no hits in the bottom half – getting back-to-back sacrifice flies from Klipsch and Van Nostrand to re-take a 2-1 lead.

Lewis put together three hits with two outs in the top of the fourth to even the score, but sophomore Devin Gudehus came through with what would eventually be the game-winning RBI on a single through the left side in the bottom of the inning. Schmidt – pinch-running for the second time on the day – scampered home for the third run.

Then, in the fifth, Richardson added insurance, as her double into the left field corner brought home Van Nostrand, who reached via error, for a 4-2 lead.

That would be enough for Henze in the final innings, as last season's co-GLVC Pitcher of the Year kept the Flyers at bay the rest of the way. She struck out four and gave up seven hits on the day, but induced both eight fly-outs and ground-outs to preserve Truman's eighth consecutive victory.
