Softball Sweeps McKendree in Saturday Road Action

LEBANON, Ill. - - A pair of routs ran the Truman softball win streak to double digits on Saturday afternoon, as the Bulldogs picked up a 5-inning 10-0 shutout win in game one before returning with an 8-1 victory in game two at McKendree (Ill.).

The Bulldogs (14-4, 6-0 GLVC) hit .404 on the day – getting four hits apiece from Whitney Richardson and Lex Van Nostrand, while Ally McReynolds swatted a grand slam as part of a five-RBI game. While the offense was racking up 18 runs and seven multi-base hits, the pitching duo of Kelsea Dorsey and Kindra Henze limited the Bearcats (7-13, 1-5 GLVC) to just one run in 12 innings of work in the circle.

A tough doubleheader awaits Truman on Sunday, as the purple and white stop in the capital city of Illinois for a 12 p.m. twinbill against Illinois Springfield. The Prairie Stars are 16-5 on the season, 5-1 in the GLVC, after a sweep of Quincy on Saturday.

Game 1 (Truman 10-0, 5 inn.)
The Truman offense scored in four of the five innings, pounding out 12 hits and four extra-base knocks in a 10-0 shutout of McKendree in the opener.

With two outs and two on in the top of the first, Richardson drew a walk to load the bases in front of McReynolds. The senior then deposited her second home run of the season over the outfield fence for a grand slam – putting an early four-spot on the scoreboard for the visitors. It was the first grand slam of her career and first by a Bulldog since last season's GLVC tournament opening round, when then-junior Liz Leath recorded the third of her career.

After a quiet second inning, Richardson and McReynolds added RBIs in the third for a 6-0 lead, before a Van Nostrand double plated both Nikki Moss and Jamie Fowle in the top of the fourth for an 8-0 spread. Richardson added another RBI double for a 9-0 margin, before a Moss RBI single in the top of the fifth pushed the team into double-figures.

Meanwhile, Dorsey was efficient in the circle as – after giving up two hits to the first five batters of the McK lineup – she sat down the final 12 hitters to come to the plate to earn her eighth win of the season. She struck out six and did not walk a batter to drop her season-ERA to 1.75.

Game 2 (Truman 8-1)
Three Bulldogs played long-ball, and Henze struck out seven in as many innings during an 8-1 game two victory.

After sitting down in order in the first, the Bulldogs put three on the board in the second – beginning on a scamper home from third by Liz Leath as McReynolds stole second. Then, one batter later, Devin Gudehus blasted her first home run as a Bulldog – a two-run shot that scored McReynolds for a 3-0 lead.

A one-out, solo shot in the top of the fourth gave Fowle her first collegiate round-tripper, with Leath posting an RBI single that brought Andrea Klipsch across home for a 5-0 cushion. Then, Richardson sent her first home run of the season on a one-way ticket, scoring pinch-runner Valerie Schmidt and pushing the Truman lead to 7-0.

After McKendree broke the shutout streak with a single run in the fifth, the Bulldogs moved the ledger back to a seven run lead in the top of the seventh when Richardson tallied her third RBI of the game.

For the game, the Bulldogs recorded 11 hits, with Henze going the distance for her sixth win of the season. She gave up just the one run and walked only one, while striking out seven Bearcats at the plate.
