Pinch Perfect: Late Heroics Help Softball Earn Split at UIS

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - - A pair of back-and-forth affairs between two of the Great Lakes Valley Conference's top teams finished in a split on Sunday, as the Truman and Illinois Springfield softball squads traded 5-2 and 6-3 decisions at the Land of Lincoln Complex.

The Bulldogs (15-5, 7-1 GLVC) took game one in extra innings behind a bases-clearing double by freshman Ashley Murphy, with UIS building an early lead and holding on in game two. Truman's win in game one pushed the team's win streak to 11, before the Prairie Stars (19-6, 6-2 GLVC) handed the purple and white its first true road loss of 2015.

Senior Andrea Klipsch recorded four hits on the day and added a pair of walks for a .750 on-base percentage, while both she and sophomore Devin Gudehus recorded a home run. Both juniors Kelsea Dorsey and Kindra Henze picked up a start and a relief appearance on the day, with Henze getting both decisions tacked to her record.

Truman returns to Kirksville this Wednesday for a non-conference twinbill against former MIAA-rival Lincoln (Mo.) The first pitch against the Blue Tigers in the mid-week doubleheader is set for 2 p.m., with free live video, audio, and stat options scheduled to be available for all fans.

Game 1 (Truman 5-2, 8 inn.)
A bases-clearing, two-out pinch-hitting appearance by FR Ashley Murphy broke open a tied game in the top of the eighth inning, as the Bulldogs took game one against the Prairie Stars by a 5-2 score.

The teams were scoreless through four, as Truman's JR Kelsey Dorsey and UIS' Alexandria Smith (7-4), dueled in the circle. The Bulldogs broke through in the fifth, as SR Andrea Klipsch homered to right-center, scoring FR Jamie Fowle – who singled with two outs – to give Truman a 2-0 lead.

UIS would tie it up and put the game in jeopardy in the home half of the sixth, as the Stars scored two quick runs and put a runner on second with nobody out. Head coach Erin Brown went to her bullpen, bringing out game two starter JR Kindra Henze, who proceeded to strand a pair of runners and get the 'Dogs out of the inning without further damage.

A scoreless seventh sent the teams to extras, and with two outs and SR Liz Leath on first base, SO Haley Wells was hit by a pitch and SO Devin Gudehus drew a full count walk. Brown then signaled the bench, pinch-hitting Murphy, who delivered with a double on a 1-2 count to clear the bases and give the Bulldogs a 5-2 lead. Henze then retired the side in the home half, earning her seventh win of the season with three innings of scoreless relief work.

Fowle's two hits out of the leadoff spot led Truman's offense, as both she and SO Lex Van Nostrand added a stolen base apiece. Dorsey pitched five innings and struck out four, taking the no-decision.

Game 2 (Ill.-Springfield 6-3)
After taking a pair of early punches, the Bulldogs tried to deliver enough return jabs to earn a Sunday sweep; however, the Prairie Stars kept Truman just enough at arms-length in earning a 6-3 win in game two. The loss saddled Truman with its first GLVC defeat of the 2015 season.

UIS jumped all over Bulldog starter Henze in the bottom of the first, plating three runs on a fielder's choice and a two-run homerun. A fourth run came in the second, before Truman began to claw back in the top of the sixth. A pair of hit by pitches drawn by SR Ally McReynolds and Wells led off the inning, before Gudehus belted her second home run of the weekend to pull Truman within one at 4-3. FR Alyssa Spoerer reached via a fielding error, but a double play during Fowle's at-bat quickly erased the base paths.

The Stars then added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, before Truman went quietly in the top of the seventh.

Klipsch (3) and Gudehus (2) combined for five of Truman's six hits in the game, while Henze started and went 5.2 innings and struck out three. Dorsey entered in relief, getting the final out of the sixth with a strikeout.

Taylor Bowlby (12-2) picked up the win for UIS in the circle, as she struck out nine in five innings, while Ashli King recorded a double and the home run for the Stars.
