DETROIT, Mich. – The Wayne State Warriors scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to come from behind and defeat the Truman Bulldogs 21-20 on Saturday afternoon. Truman will raise the curtain on Great Lakes Valley Conference play next Saturday when they host Missouri S&T at 7 p.m.
Scoring Summary:- Truman went up 7-0 on a 31-yard pass from Devonte Black to Felix Neboh at the 7:56 mark of the first quarter.
- Key Play – The Bulldog defense set the offense up in good field position following a six-yard sack on third down by Brian Craft to make the Warriors punt from their own 19 into the wind.
- WSU tied the game on the first play of the second quarter on an eight yard pass from D.J. Zezula to Manny Mendoza to cap off an 11-play, 58-yard drive.
- Key Play(s) – Zezula completed two 21-yard passes to Jamel Hicks. The first was on third and 10 at midfield and the second came on third and eight down to the Bulldog two.
- Truman retook the lead 10-7 on a 27-yard field goal by Nick Dolezal with 3:02 left before half. The drive consumed nine plays and 39 yards.
- Key Play (s) – Bulldogs started at midfield after another big sack on third down. Randy Schroeder completed his first collegiate pass to Joey Schenck on first down for 13 yards and Andy Satulla had a seven yard run with a personal foul, late hit called added on to move the ball down to the WSU nine.
- Brass Woods caught his first career pass, a seven-yard touchdown strike from Black with 45 seconds remaining in the first half to put Truman up 17-7.
- Key Play (s) – Ben Wellman forced a fumble and Devin Gillespie recovered to set Truman up at their own 46. On fourth and 10 at the 30, Black completed a screen pass to A.J. Hartfield for 23 yards.
- Truman extended their lead to 20-7 after a collegiate career-long 35-yard field goal by Dolezal at the 4:24 mark in the third quarter.
- Key Play (s) – Austin Zoda forced a fumble that was recovered by Kade Young at midfield. Facing a third and three, Black called his own number and ran for 27 yards to the Warrior 25.
- Jamel Hicks caught and scored on a 25-yard touchdown pass at the 13:40 mark of the fourth quarter to cut the lead down to six points. That capped off an 11-play, 85-yard drive.
- Key Play (s) – After nine straight running plays, Zezula found Hicks on the right side for the score. The Warriors converted on a fourth and one from their own 47.
- Wayne State grabbed the lead on a five-yard run by Romello Brown at the 9:47 mark of the fourth quarter. Majd Khytaz added the extra point and the 21-20 advantage.
- Key Play (s) – On the previous Truman possession, Black was stopped for a three yard loss and then sacked on second down. Nathan White blocked the punt by Brock Rohler and WSU started the drive at Truman's 18 yard line.
Key Stats:- Wayne State finished with 271 yards of total offense (174 rush, 97 pass) while Truman finished with 227 yards (100 rush, 127 pass).
- Devonte Black finished 10-of-28 with 102 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. His top target was Felix Neboh with 43 yards on four catches, long of 31.
- D.J. Zezula was 9-of-20 for 97 yards and two touchdowns for Wayne State. Jamel Hicks caught six passes for 77 yards and a score.
- A.J. Hartfield was Truman's leading rusher with 10 for 50 yards. Black added 31 on nine and Andy Satulla had 19 on eight attempts.
- WSU rushed 53 times with Romello Brown gaining a team-high 73 yard on 24 carries. Demetrious Stinson had 61 yards on 17 attempts.
- The Bulldogs had one first down in the second half and were outgained 150 to 60.
- Truman defense registered eight tackles for loss totaling 34 yards with two sacks and two turnovers forced. Austin Zoda led with nine stops and Luke Lamar had eight with two tackles for loss and a sack.
- Wayne State had seven tackles for loss and were credited with two sacks. James Howard led the Warriors with seven tackles.
- The Warriors dominated the time of possession with 35 minutes total and nearly nine minutes in both the third and fourth quarters.
- Both teams were a combine five for five in redzone chances.
- Derek Hammann had six punt returns for 32 yards and a long of 10 and one kick return for 26 yards.
Game Notes:- It was Truman's second straight road game to start the season totaling nearly 2,600 miles roundtrip.
- It was the first one-point loss by the Bulldogs since a 2011 loss to the eventual national champion, Pittsburg State. The Gorillas scored with 16 seconds left to escape Stokes Stadium with a 27-26 victory.
- WSU took a 3-2 lead in the all-time series with the Bulldogs. It was the first meeting between the two schools since 1975. The Warriors have won the last three games.
- It is the first 0-2 start by Truman since the 2006 season, the last time they started on the road for the first two games. After falling in week three to start 0-3, the team won six of the last eight to finish 6-5.
