Miners Spoil Truman's Family Night

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Missouri S&T scored 10 unanswered points to spoil Truman Football's home and conference opener by a 10-7 score in front of a capacity crowd at Stokes Stadium. The Bulldogs fall to 0-3 on the season.

Scoring Summary:
  • Truman scored first as Devonte Black found Joey Schenck for a five-yard TD pass late in the first quarter to cap off a 15-play, 85-yard drive.
    • Key Play: Black found Felix Neboh for a 10 yard reception on third and seven from the MST 30 yardline to keep the drive alive. Black later hit Jordan Jorgenson at the S&T six on a third and six play.
  • Missouri S&T trimmed the lead on a 23-yard field goal by Nolan Mannino at the 10 minute mark of the second quarter.
    • Key Play: Spencer Elrod returned a punt 35 yards down to the Bulldog 13. The Truman defense held the Miners as they had to settle for the field goal.
  • Backup quarterback Tyler Swart marched the Miners down the field late in the third quarter and capped off the seven-play, 72-yard drive with a one yard QB sneak to put S&T on top.
    • Key Play: Swart completed a 43-yard pass to Ray Mullen on third and 11 to switch the field from the S&T 27 to the Bulldog 30. 
 
Key Stats:
  • S&T had nearly a two-to-one advantage on possession time in the second half. The Miners held the ball for 19:54 while Truman had it for 10:06. In the fourth quarter alone, the Miners had the ball for nearly 12 minutes.
  • The Miners had 198 of their 321 yards of total offense in the second half while Truman had 84 of their 287 in the final 30 minutes of play.
  • Both starting quarterbacks led their respective teams in rushing. Lamar Wilkes tied Dalton Major with 50 net yards rushing and Devonte Black led Truman with 56 yards on 13 carries.
  • S&T started four drives deep in Bulldog territory but came away with just three points. The Miners missed three field goals of 24, 27 and 29 yards.
  • Malique Robbins garnered the most carries for his young career with 13 for 49 yards and a long of 12.
  • Joey Schenck caught eight passes for 66 yards, a long of 36 and the touchdown.
  • Black finished 15-of-28 for 116 yards and an interception.
  • Randy Schroeder, in one series, was 5-of-6 for 53 yards before the Bulldogs turned it over on downs at the S&T24.
  • Austin Zoda led Truman's defense with 11 tackles and the Bulldogs finished with 10 tackles for loss totaling 30 yards.
  • Austin Truvillion was the Miners' leader on defense with 15 stops and 2.5 tackles for loss.
  • The Miners collected three Bulldog turnovers while Truman did not gain a turnover on the night.
 
Game Notes:
  • It was the 78th meeting between the two schools and the 23rd win by Missouri S&T in the series. Their last win came at Stokes Stadium in overtime in 2008.
  • The Bulldogs were held scoreless in the second half for the second straight game and have now only scored three points total in the second half of the three games this season.
  • Truman's last 0-3 start was in 2006, that year they would win six of the final eight games to finish 6-5.
  • Announced attendance was 5,025.
Up Next:
Truman will head to Lincoln University in Jefferson City for a 2 p.m. game against the Blue Tigers. Lincoln is 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in the GLVC after a 42-37 loss to Quincy University on Saturday.
