Women's Soccer Ties Lewis in Home Showdown

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - The Truman women's soccer team is testing its conditioning at the outset of the 2015 season, as for the third time in the past four matches, the Bulldogs went the full 110 minutes and settled for a draw. Truman and Lewis each scored in the opening half, but neither found the goal line the rest of the way in a 1-1 stalemate at the Bulldog Soccer Park.

Quick Recap:
  • Final: Truman 1, Lewis 1
  • Records: Truman (2-1-3, 1-0-2 GLVC) || Lewis (4-1-1, 2-0-1 GLVC)
  • Scoring Summary: (11:32) – TSU Allison Lockett (1), assist: Megan Whitehead || (34:42) – LEWIS Maggie Moran (4), Assist: Brianne Pettas

Match Breakdown:
  • Truman dominated possession for the first 10 minutes of the match, getting a pay-off in the 12th minute when Lockett knocked in a Whitehead cross to put the Bulldogs on top, 1-0. It was Lockett's first career goal in 26 matches as a Bulldog.
  • Lewis recovered, however, when the Flyers' leading goal scorer Moran rebounded a shot off Truman keeper Katie Mattingly in the 35th minute.
  • Neither team could mount much in the second half or first overtime, but each had a golden chance late in the second extra session. Lewis' Mackenzie Fuller had her shot tipped just wide of the bar by Mattingly with 3:23 to play, while Truman's Alexis Heffernan had her last-second attempt saved right before the final horn by Lewis keeper Jennifer Meyer.
  • Truman used a 7-1 advantage in the 20 overtime minutes to out-shoot the Flyers for the match, 21-12, with the purple and white also earning 11 corner kicks to Lewis' five.
  • Mattingly made five saves for Truman, while Meyer posted five saves for the Flyers.

Coach Says:
  • "We started well against a very good attacking side and scored a good goal after getting in behind on the right side. We tired a bit as Lewis played a bit more direct with their quality forwards and conceded a goal later in the half. In the second half and overtime, I felt we played some of our best soccer of the season so far and created a number of quality chances, but we just didn't finish another one to get the win." – head coach Mike Cannon.

Extra Notes:
  • This was the third draw in six matches to start the season for the Bulldogs. Truman had just two ties all of last season.
  • Megan Whitehead becomes the first Bulldog to record both a goal and an assist this season.
  • Truman and Lewis have now tied each of the three meetings as GLVC members. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series, 7-5-3.

Up Next:
  • Truman will host UW-Parkside at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 20) afternoon. The Rangers are 2-2-1 overall (1-1-1 GLVC) after a scoreless draw at No. 3 Quincy on Friday night.
