Women's Soccer Edges Wisconsin-Parkside

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - Two goals in the first half pushed the Truman women's soccer team into the lead, and the defense made it hold up for the final 55 minutes in a 2-1 Bulldog victory against Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday afternoon at the Bulldog Soccer Park.

Quick Recap:
  • Final Score: Truman 2, UW-Parkside 1
  • Records: Truman (3-1-3, 2-0-2 GLVC) || UW-Parkside (2-3-1, 1-2-1 GLVC)
  • Goal Summary: (7:06) – UWP – Jillian Hetfleisch (1), assist: Taylor Schiffer-Jander; (13:24) – TSU – Stephanie Williams (1); (35:46) – TSU – Laura Ney (1), assist: Danielle Beers

Match Breakdown:
  • Each team came out aggressively, putting a pair of shots on goal in the opening minutes, before a Parkside rebounded slid across the box to an open Hetfleisch, who found the end line for an early 1-0 Ranger lead in the eighth minute.
  • Truman would rally, however, as the game's next action came six minutes later when Williams took a shot, corralled the deflection, and marked the return to sender in the 14th minute past a diving Parkside keeper.
  • The Bulldogs had a flurry of chances in the 19th and 20th minutes, with Alexis Heffernan hitting the crossbar, while Parkside also mounted a handful of threats which were all sniffed out by the Bulldog defense and keeper Katie Mattingly.
  • In the 36th minute, substitute Beers, who had been on the field for less than 90 seconds, sent a corner kick into the box, where Ney hammered home the loose ball for a 2-1 Truman lead.
  • The teams each took nine shots in the first half, but the second half saw both the Truman offense continue its pressure with nine more shots as well as the Bulldog defense clamping down and surrendering just four shots to the potent Ranger attack.
  • Truman had eight corner kicks overall – four in each half – while UWP never got to the end line.
  • Heffernan and Williams took four shots each, while Mattingly made four saves in net.

Coach Says:
  • "We fell behind early to a very good UWP side but continued to play like we started the game. I was really proud of our fight back with two opportunistic first half goals to get the lead. The second half was even better with our defensive work and nearly putting the game to bed with a third goal. It was a great team effort for the win after our long extended week." – Mike Cannon.

Extra Notes:
  • The Bulldogs closed a stretch of five matches in 10 days with a 2-0-3 mark.
  • Truman now holds a 5-3 edge in the all-time series, with Sunday serving as the eighth meeting between the schools.
  • It was the first collegiate goal for Ney, while Williams netted her second career tally as a Bulldog.

Up Next:
  • The Bulldogs hit the road for two matches next weekend, beginning on Friday, Sept. 25 at Indianapolis. Kickoff against the Greyhounds is slated for 4 p.m. (CT).
