Women's Soccer Picks Up 1-0 Road Shutout at UIndy

INDIANAPOLIS - - Senior forward Alexis Heffernan cracked the Truman women's soccer program's all-time top-10 for career goals scored, as her 32nd minute tally was all the Bulldogs needed on the road Friday night to defeat Indianapolis 1-0 at Key Stadium.

Quick Recap:
  • Final Score: Truman 1, Indianapolis 0
  • Records: Truman (4-1-3, 3-0-2 GLVC) || Indianapolis (1-5-1, 0-4-1 GLVC)
  • Goal Summary: (31:07) – TSU – Alexis Heffernan (3)

Match Breakdown:
  • Neither team manufactured much offense in the first 30 minutes of the match, as it wasn't until Heffernan's goal in the 32nd minute that Truman recorded a shot. The senior put a strong attempt on frame, marking her team-leading third tally of the season.
  • UIndy finished the half with a three-shot barrage – all missing the target – but continued the onslaught early in the second half with a shot that hit the crossbar and a second save of the match for Truman keeper Katie Mattingly.
  • The Bulldogs turned the tide mid-way through the half, getting shots on goal by Jessica Hanson, Heffernan, and Megan Whitehead to keep UIndy on its heels.
  • Mattingly didn't have to make a save after the 48th minute, as the Bulldog defense either blocked or forced wide the final three Greyhound attempts.
  • UIndy out-shot Truman 10-6 overall, but the Bulldogs put four of their six (to Indy's three of 10) on frame. Truman also picked up six corner kicks to Indianapolis' four.
  • Mattingly picked up her third shutout of the season and dropped her goals-against average to 0.86.

Extra Notes:
  • Heffernan's goal was the 22nd of her career, tying her with Jill Benson (1994-1997) for 10th all-time on the Truman career goal scoring chart. She is two back of Olivia Hayes (2009-2012) and three back of Trisha Shoemaker (2011-2013) for 9th and 8th, respectively.
  • Truman remains as one of three unbeaten teams in the GLVC.
  • The Bulldogs now hold a 4-3 edge in the all-time series, including the third straight shutout for Truman against UIndy since joining the GLVC in 2013.

Up Next:
  • Truman closes out the weekend trip by visiting Saint Joseph's (Ind.) on Sunday, Sept. 27, at 12 p.m. The Pumas fell to 1-4 in the GLVC on Friday afternoon with a 2-0 home loss to Quincy.
