Bulldogs Roar Back in Second Half to Down Drury

Season Stats

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - - Senior guard Cole Myers scored a career-high 23 points, including 12 in a row during Truman's second-half comeback, as the Bulldogs won for the second straight year at Drury in an 82-72 Saturday afternoon victory at the O'Reilly Family Events Center.

The Bulldogs (16-5, 8-3 GLVC) trailed by seven at the break but out-scored DU 54-37 in the final 20 minutes to knock the Panthers (12-7, 7-4 GLVC) out of what had been a three-way tie atop the West division standings at 7-3 entering the day. Truman remains tied atop the division table with seven games to play with arch-rival Quincy, who picked up a win at Missouri S&T on Saturday afternoon.

"We just kept battling," head coach Chris Foster said during his post-game interview with 104.7 FM KRES radio. "I thought we got a lot of good looks in the first half but didn't shoot it well. We were able to get some stuff around the rim and loosen up the defense a bit in the second half, which then allowed us to step up and shoot it with confidence down the stretch."

Two major turning points helped spur the Bulldogs to victory – both coming as part of the second-half comeback that saw the purple and white shoot 12-of-19 overall from the floor, including 8-of-13 from three-point range.  The first started at the 14:33 mark when Myers, who scored 20 of his career-high 23 points in the final stanza, hit a three-pointer off a Dwight Sistrunk, Jr., assist to cut the DU lead to four. Myers would then proceed to score the next nine Bulldog points, putting Truman on his back and eventually on top 49-47 at the end of the run.

Then, after Drury took a 60-59 lead on a pair of free throws with 6:47 on the clock, Truman scored eight in a row and 13 of the next 15 to take a double-digit lead (72-62) with 2:02 left to play. From there, clutch free throw shooting would never let the Panthers drop the lead to less than eight, as the Bulldogs logged their second straight regular season victory at "The 'O" after an 85-81 win in Springfield last season.

Myers' 23 points came in 25 minutes of action, as he went 4-of-8 from the field (3-of-6 3FG) and 12-of-15 from the foul line. Junior guard Kyle Kanaskie, who tied his previous career-best with 22 points at Missouri S&T on Thursday night, scored 18 points on Saturday behind four three-balls. Redshirt junior Cory Myers added 15 points, as the trio also combined for 16 rebounds, nine assists, and five steals out of the guard spots.

Truman shot 46% from the floor for the game and connected on 12-of-30 three-pointers. An added bonus came from the charity stripe, where the 70-percent-shooting Bulldogs for the season connected at a 77% rate with 26 makes in 34 tries on Saturday. Drury countered at 49% overall from the floor and 10-of-22 from three-point range but hit just 12-of-19 free throws. Kameron Bundy and Tevin Foster paced the Panthers with 20 points apiece.

The Bulldogs out-rebounded DU by a 32-30 margin and forced 18 Panther miscues that led directly to 16 Truman points. The Truman bench – sparked heavily by Myers – out-paced DU's by a 29-7 margin as well, although the Panthers saw three starters log more than 37 minutes apiece.

After a 2-0 road weekend through southern Missouri against West divisional foes, the 'Dogs will return to the trail next Thursday and Saturday with a trek east to Indiana. Truman kicks off the trip with a 7:30 p.m. (CT) tipoff in Rensselaer, Ind., on Feb. 4 (Thursday) against Saint Joseph's (8-12, 4-7 GLVC).

Additional Notes:
  • Truman cut DU's all-time series lead to 8-6 with Saturday's win. The Bulldogs hold a 2-1 lead against the Panthers since joining the GLVC in the 2013-14 season.
  • The Bulldogs improved to 14-0 this season (29-0 under HC Chris Foster in two seasons) when they score 80 points in a game.
  • Truman closed the month of January with a 7-2 record.
  • HC Foster improved his career coaching record to 36-15 (.706) and is just two wins away from catching former HC Matt Woodley's three-year total of 38, set from 2011-2014.
