Season Stats

RENSSELAER, Ind. - - The Truman men withstood a ferocious three-point barrage by Saint Joseph's College on Thursday night, as the Bulldogs moved into first place all by themselves in the Great Lakes Valley Conference's West division during a 98-94 road victory at the Scharf Fieldhouse.

The Bulldogs, who improved to 17-5 overall (9-3 GLVC) with the victory, sit all alone in first place in the GLVC West division table after former co-leader Quincy (14-7, 8-4 GLVC) dropped a 98-66 decision at Indianapolis on Thursday night. Truman will head down I-65 to visit UIndy (16-4, 10-2 GLVC) on Saturday afternoon at 2:15 p.m. (CT).

"We got just enough stops down the stretch, and I'm really proud of the guys for fighting and sticking with it to get the job done tonight," head coach Chris Foster said during a post-game interview with 104.7 KRES-FM.

Truman led by 11 late in the first half, but Saint Joseph's (9-13, 4-8 GLVC) battled back before the break to give the Bulldogs just a six point (44-38) lead at the break. The Bulldogs shot 52 percent from the floor in the first half and hit three of the team's four three-pointers on the night.

In the second half, the Pumas came out blazing – hitting four of their first five three-pointers en route to nine in the final 20 minutes – to keep pressure on Truman the entire night. The game featured eight ties and four lead changes; however, the Bulldogs finally got it back to a three-possession game with just more than four minutes to play at 82-75. From there, Truman hit enough free throws down the stretch to counter more Puma triples to hold on for the third straight road victory during this current four-game road trip.

"I thought in the first half our motion was a little stagnant," Foster said. "A team like [Saint Joseph's] will get you into a transition game, but once we were able to slow down and get the game at our pace, I thought we did a much better job late."

Redshirt junior Connor Erickson led all Bulldogs with 21 points to tie his previous career-high, set earlier this season at Upper Iowa, and also grabbed six rebounds. Redshirt senior Andrew Vander Zwaag scored 19 points behind 6-of-13 shooting, and junior Kyle Kanaskie added 17 points as well. Junior Billy Daniel came off the bench to post 11 points and a team-best eight rebounds, as Truman out-rebounded Saint Joseph's by a 40-34 margin.

For the game, Truman shot 53% (32-of-61) from the field but connected on just 4-of-18 (22%) of its three-point tries. The Bulldogs, fueled by a handful of free throws late during the Pumas' attempt to crawl back, finished 30-of-39 (77%) from the foul line. Redshirt junior Dwight Sistrunk, Jr. scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds, while redshirt junior Cory Myers recorded an eight-point, six-assist, five-rebound night. Freshman Jake Velky poured in seven points, and senior Cole Myers scored six points to round out Truman's eight-man rotation on Thursday night.
