KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Truman men's soccer team put a mark in the win column against a ranked opponent for the first time this season (0-2 previously) on Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs knocked off No. 18 Missouri-St. Louis thanks to the efforts of two seniors on their Senior Day at Bulldog Soccer Park.
With the win, Truman improved to 6-6-3 overall and 4-6-2 in the GLVC while UMSL dropped to 10-4-1 on the year, 9-3-1 in league action and had its four-match winning streak snapped. The home team had the advantage in total shots (14-9) and saves (4-3) while the two squads were knotted up in shots on goal (5-5) and corner kicks (4-4).
The Purple and White wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as
Craig McLaurine found the back of the net in the sixth minute and was assisted by
Joel Reft's second helper of the season. That score pushed McLaurine's team lead in the category to four.
The visitors tied things up with a goal in the 34th minute, but
Tyler Luebbert (pictured) wasn't about to let his Senior Day be ruined. In the 74th minute, Luebbert was given a beautiful serve by
Ben Rosenblatt and converted for his first score of the year. That assist was Rosenblatt's second of 2016.
In goal,
Zac Suazo made four saves on a total of nine shots faced in 90 minutes of play. McLaurine registered three shots while
Brian Kane,
Trevor Kaufmann and T. Luebbert each had two.
Next up, Truman is at Maryville on Sunday with kickoff set for 2:30 p.m.
