CEDARVILLE, Ohio - When the Truman men's basketball program played Trevecca Nazarene for the first time in program history back on Nov. 15, 2014, the Trojans won that game by just two points, 76-74. In the teams' two meetings since then, the Bulldogs have more than done enough to avenge that loss. In those two contests, Truman has outscored Trevecca 189-121 including Saturday's 92-55 rout in the Fifth Annual Don Callan Classic.
With the win, the Bulldogs start a season 2-0 for the first time since the 2013-14 campaign while the Trojans are even at 1-1. Truman boasted four players with at least 10 points including
Nathan Messer (game-high 19),
Jack Green (tied career-high 18),
Jake Velky (pictured/16 and six rebounds), and
Connor Erickson (10 and six boards). Messer, through two games, has accounted for 37 points on 14-of-27 shooting including 9-for-19 from deep. Meanwhile, Green reached double-figures for the second time in his career and did so without missing a shot on six field goal attempts, four of which were triples.
Leading the way in the distribution department were
Dwight Sistrunk, Jr. and
Cory Myers who tallied eight and seven assists, respectively. Those two contributed to the team's efficient assist-to-turnover ratio of 28-to-13. Diving even deeper into the team statistics, Truman shot 58.1 percent (36-of-62)Â from the floor and 53.3 percent (16-for-30) from behind the arc including an astounding 64 percent and 69 percent, respectively, in the first 20 minutes. Those 16 makes from distance are tied for the third-most in program history and three of the top four marks in that category have been set during head coach,
Chris Foster's, tutelage.
As far as head-to-head, the Bulldogs owned the Trojans in points off turnovers (26-5), bench points (37-29) and points in the paint (32-22). Because of the wide margin, four players made their 2016-17 debuts including
Zach Fischer (six points),
Taurin Hughes (two points),
Connor Lusso (two points), and
Jacob Socha (four minutes played).
In the beginning, Trevecca struck first before the score was tied at 6-6 and Truman then began to really assert itself. The Bulldogs proceeded to score 21 of the next 23 points and in the blink of an eye, the margin was 27-8 in favor of the good guys with just over nine minutes until the break. Truman's first-half lead would balloon to as many as 32, 47-15, before the halftime score of 47-17. In the next 20 minutes, the Bulldogs' advantage was never smaller than 26 and grew to as big as 34 on three different occasions.
Next up, Truman will travel to Lindenwood on Wednesday with the start time set for 7 p.m. in St. Charles, Mo.
