KIRKSVILLE, Mo. –The #7 Lewis Flyers had to hold on and fight off a pesky Truman Women's Basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Pershing Arena. Lewis remained perfect in GLVC action with a 59-51 win over the Bulldogs.
 
The Flyers won their 19th straight game and improved to 24-1 overall and 15-0 in the GLVC. Truman had their winning streak snapped at three and falls to 17-8 overall and 11-4 in the conference.
 
How It Happened:
  • The Bulldogs raced out to an early lead fueled by an emotional senior day pregame activities. Truman scored nine of the first 11 points kickstarted by Courtney Strait's opening three-pointer.
  • The Flyers tandem of Jessica Kelliher and Mariyah Brawner-Henley took over and scored the next 10 points and Lewis went on top 12-9.
  • The two teams battled over the next four minutes with the Flyers taking a 20-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • The second quarter proved to be the devastating for the Bulldogs. Truman hit one of 14 field goal attempts while the Flyers were 8-of-14 from the field to open up a 17-point halftime lead at 38-21.
  • The Bulldogs were able to claw their way back in the third quarter by outscoring the Flyers 17-9 and held Brawner-Henley to only two points from the field.
  • Strait was 3-of-5 in the third with a pair of three-pointers for eight points.
  • Brawner-Henley scored the first four points of the fourth to push the lead back out to 13 but Truman reeled off six straight to cut the margin down to seven with six minutes left.
  • A three by Kasey Gassensmith followed by a jumper from Rachel Edmundson made it a one possession game at 54-51 with 1:27 left to play.
  • Brawner-Henley responded with her final field goal of the game in Lewis' next possession then blocked a three-point attempt by Edmundson, corralled a rebound was fouled and hit a free throw with 37 seconds left to seal the win.
 
Key Stats/Game Notes:
  • Brawner-Henley led all scorers with 26 points and added 12 rebounds in 38 minutes. She was 10-of-18 from the field and 6-of-9 at the foul line.
  • Her front court mate Jessica Kelliher scored 11 on 5-of-13 shooting.
  • Courtney Strait recorded her second straight double-double and fourth of her career with 11 points and 10 boards.
  • Gassensmith led Truman in scoring with a dozen.
  • Truman shot 27.6% for the game on 16-of-58 shooting and made seven of 23 three-pointers.
  • Lewis was 52.9% for the floor (24-55) with a pair of three-pointers.
  • Michalina Tomczak had four blocks as Truman shattered the single-season team record with 109.

Truman will wrap up the home regular season on Thursday night as they host William Jewell College at 5:30 p.m. in Pershing Arena.
