QUINCY, Ill. –The Bulldog Women's Basketball team lost the regular season finale to the #23-ranked Quincy (Ill.) Lady Hawks 65-53 and will now host a Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament First Round game on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
 
The Bulldogs finish the regular season with a 19-9 overall record and 13-5 GLVC mark. Quincy improves to 23-4 and 14-4 in the conference. The Lady Hawks get the first round bye with the number four seed.
 
Truman enters the GLVC Tournament as the number five seed and will face Missouri-St. Louis, the 12th seed on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs and Tritons met twice during the regular season with each team winning overtime games on their own home court. UMSL won 61-60 in double overtime on January 2 while Truman on the conference game in Kirksville 78-73 needing only one extra overtime period.
 
How It Happened:
  • The Bulldogs scored the first eight points out of the gate with a three by Kasey Gassensmith, a basket by Cassidy Clark and a three by Brooke Bailey to lead 8-0 after the first five minutes of the game.
  • Quincy scored the next 13 points to end the quarter and start the second to go up 13-8.
  • The Lady Hawks took a 30-18 lead into the locker room.
  • The lead swelled to 17 points following a three-pointer by Carly Beebe at the 7:34 mark of the third quarter.
  • The Bulldogs got it back to single digits with a 9-1 run including five straight from Rachel Steinhoff.
  • The margin see-sawed between seven and 12 points for around 10 minutes until back-to-back triples from Courtney Strait pulled Truman to within four at 49-45 with 6:45 left to play.
  • Maggie Cunningham scored the next five for Quincy to regain control and Kara Gerbus' three-pointer with 3:49 put the lead back to a dozen and into double figures for good.
 
Key Stats/Game Notes:
  • Courtney Strait led Truman with 17 points and had six rebounds. She was 5-of-11 from the field with three, three-pointers.
  • Kasey Gassensmith added 13 points with a pair of three-pointers.
  • Truman matched a season-low in free throw attempts with seven and set a season low in free throws made with five. Quincy had 13 more opportunities from the line and converted on 15 of the 20 attempts.
  • Maggie Cunningham paced the Lady Hawks with 23 points on her senior night and Anika Webster added 15.
  • Truman shot 32% from the field and made 8-of-23 three-point attempts (34.8%).
  • Quincy shot 41.5% overall and was 6-of-13 from three (46.2%).
  • The two teams split their regular season series for the second straight year with both clubs winning on their home court.
 
Up Next:
Truman heads to their fifth straight conference postseason tournament and third straight under the GLVC banner. The Bulldogs were the 2014 GLVC Tournament Champions.
 
Missouri-St. Louis got the final spot in the 12-team tournament with a 62-60 win over Maryville (Mo.) University on Thursday night. The Tritons got a basket by Jordan Fletcher with three seconds left to break a 60-all tie and win the winner-take-all game over the Saints.
 
Ticket prices for Sunday's doubleheader are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children in grades K-12. Truman students will be admitted free.
