Second Half Goal Draws Truman Women's Soccer Even With Ashland

Box Score (HTML)

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Freshman Hanna Burke's equalizer in the 54th minute gave #25 Truman Women's Soccer a 1-1 home draw against Ashland (Ohio) in the season opener on Thursday afternoon.

The Eagles, who were 14-4 last season, controlled the early part of the match and finally broke through in the 27th minute. Following a throw in near midfield, Korinna Lakes and Juliana Markovic each had touches to get the ball to Lauren Gokey who rocketed a shot past Katie Mattingly from 25-yards out. The shot buzzed past Truman defenders and beat Mattingly on the left side.

Truman regained a measure of control following the goal and had a few chances before the half expired.
In the second, Allison Lockett got a pass through to Burke streaking down the middle of the field and she was able to bury her chance to tie things up.

Each team had late chances. Deijah Swihart blasted a shot wind later in the half for Ashland and Mattingly had to make a sprawling save on a point blank opportunity from Morgan Bittengle with 27 minutes remaining.

Ashland had the majority of the pressure in the first extra time and the teams exchanged golden scoring opportunities in the final minute. Swihart could not control a lob pass into the 18 from outside and on the ensuing breakout, Stephanie Williams went one-on-one with keeper Courtney Barker as time expired with Barker forcing Williams to shoot wide.

The Bulldogs matched a school record last season with six games needed extra time and went 0-1-5 in those contests. It was the first time since 1996 that Truman played their first match of the season to a draw.

Truman returns to action on Saturday at noon as they host Ohio Dominican at the Truman Soccer Park.
