Game Stats (HTML)

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Quarterback Jaden Barr threw five touchdown passes, one off the school record and the Bulldog defense stood tall as Truman routed Malone (Ohio) 35-3 in a non-conference game at Stokes Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Barr used 11 different receivers and was 21-of-35 for 245 yards and five scores. It was the most TD passes by a Bulldog since Matt Ticich tossed five in a 2007 game against Missouri Western and one off Jake Czeschin threw six against Missouri S&T in 2004.

Barr's top target was freshman Drew Slager with six receptions for 73 yards including a 14-yard TD reception late in the third quarter and the longest reception of the game, a 33-yard strike on second and 19 on Truman's first scoring drive.

The Bulldogs rolled up 364 yards of total offense on 21 first downs and converted on nine of 17 third down attempts. They scored touchdowns on all three redzone opportunities.

The defense held the Pioneers to 254 yards with 72 on the ground and 182 in the air. Star running back Matt Blasiole, who had over 178 yards in Malone's week one win, was limited to 58 yards on 13 attempts.  Quarterback John Iacucci was 16-of-28 for 182 yards and was sacked three times.

The special teams also shined. The Bulldogs recovered a pooch kickoff after going up 14-0 and converted the recovery for another TD for a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter. Punt returner Jordan Jorgenson averaged 18.3 yards per return with six for 110 and a 48-yard scamper that ended up setting the second touchdown on the afternoon.

Truman now 1-1 will open up Great Lakes Valley Conference action next Saturday night on the road against Missouri S&T. The Miners won their opening week game against Bacone (Okla.) 63-3 and plays week two at the University of West Florida.

How It Happened:
  • Jaden Barr found Joey Schenck for the game's first touchdown, a 27-yard pass to the right pylon with 5:36 left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs started in the hole with a holding penalty to start the drive but a 33-yard pass to Drew Slager moved the ball into Malone territory. After converting on a third and one, Barr connected with Schenck for the score.
  • Jordan Jorgenson set up Truman will excellent field position with a 48-yard punt return to start the next scoring drive at the Pioneers' 46. Jordan Salima got three yards for a first down on third and three and Jorgenson snared a 24-yard reception on third and 11 to move the ball down to the Malone 13. On the first play of the second quarter, Barr found C.J. Brown at the goaline for the score.
  • Justin Mikeworth recovered the pooch kickoff on the ensuing drive to set up the 'Dogs at the Malone 33. Malique Robbins caught a swing pass and got just enough for a first down as Truman faced a fourth and nine at the Malone 32. Malone got flagged for pass interference to make it first and goal and on the next play, Joey Schenck came down for his second TD reception of the game at the 13:05 mark of the quarter.
  • Malone's field goal kicker Marcus Moeller missed a field goal from 33 yards late in the first half. Moeller also missed from 45 yards before making a 30-yard field goal to account for the Pioneers only points of the game with 4:49 left in the third quarter.
  • The Bulldogs responded to the field goal as Drew Slager hauled in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Barr with 2:51 left in the third. A short kickoff allowed Truman to start the drive at midfield and nine plays later they were in the endzone for the 28-3 score.
  • Truman's final touchdown came at the 14:29 mark of the fourth quarter as Barr hit Kyle Spratt for a 23-yard touchdown pass to cap off a nine-play, 63-yard drive.
Game Notes:
  • Jorgenson led Truman in all-purpose yards with 134, 24 receiving on one catch and the 110 yards on punt returns.
  • The defense registered 13 tackles for loss for 35 yards and three sacks. Ben Wellman led the squad with seven tackles followed by Ben Chaney with six. Wellman, Caleb Bischoff and Sam Reeves were also credited with quarterback hurries.
  • The Pioneers stopped the Bulldogs five times behind the line of scrimmage and two sacks. Lamon Mathison and Josh Correll had eight stops apiece.
  • Truman committed the only two turnovers of the game, both by Barr. Daniel Tepe picked off a pass early in the third quarter but it resulted in a missed field goal and Jesse Correll recovered a fumble at the Truman 16 but the defense held Malone to their only field goal of the game.
