RECAP: Bellarmine 3, Truman 1

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Trailing two sets to none, the Truman volleyball team won the third, 25-17, but came up just short in the fourth set before falling to Bellarmine on Saturday afternoon inside Pershing Arena. The visitors won with set scores of 25-17, 25-22, 17-25, and 25-23.

With the win, the Knights improved to 10-3 overall and 1-3 in the GLVC while the Bulldogs now sit at 3-10 on the season and 2-2 in conference play. Truman's lone attacker with double-digit kills was Lacey Hill (pictured) with 11, which tied a season high for the senior. Other Bulldog leaders included Savvy Hughes (34 assists and 20 digs), Lauren Wacker (two service aces), Kayla Bastian (six blocks), and Natalie Brimeyer (six blocks).

Through the first 20 points of the first set, it was tied 10-10 and the match had seen five ties and three lead changes. From that point on, the home team cut the margin to one point twice (12-11 and 15-14), but Bellarmine ended the set on a 10-3 spurt to take a 1-0 match lead. That was the away team's best hitting set of the day at .224 percent with 17 kills and six errors on 49 total attacks.

In the second set, the hosts controlled the momentum early and led the Knights 8-6. However, Bellarmine used an 11-4 run to go back on top, 17-12, and had its biggest advantage of the set. Truman answered right away, though, with five of the next six points and the score was deadlocked at 18-18. During that stretch, the Knights made three errors of their own. Over the course of the final 11 points, Bellarmine was ahead 7-4 and won the set to go up two sets to none.

The Bulldogs won the third set and fittingly, it was their best offensive output of the match at .245 percent with 15 kills and only three errors on 49 swings. The period opened with an 11-4 run in favor of Truman and after that, the Knights were never closer than four (12-8, 14-10, and 16-12). During the Bulldogs' opening run, Bellarmine didn't help its own cause with six errors.

Midway through the fourth set, the Knights were in complete control and led by a score of 18-15. Truman didn't go down without quite the fight, though, and took the lead four different times (19-18, 20-19, 21-20, and 22-21). Bellarmine then scored four of the final five points to win the set and the match in four periods.

Next up, the Bulldogs will host Rockhurst on Friday, September 30 beginning at 7 p.m.
