QUINCY, Ill. - Even after 110 minutes of action between Truman and Lindenwood, the two teams played to a 1-1 draw in their respective 2016 season openers. Sunday marked the first time since 2006 against Rockhurst that the Bulldogs tied their opponent for the season opener.
Both squads were able to find the back of the net in the 11th minute with the Lions striking first thanks to a goal from Xhovani Dokaj at the 10:01 mark. However, Truman wasted no time in giving its answer and did so just 33 seconds later.
Derek Merry converted on a score for the second time in his career with a header on an assist from
Nate Luebbert, the third in his time as a Bulldog.
Truman held the advantage in shots (17-9), shots on goal (8-3) and corner kicks (11-7). After 45 minutes of play, Lindenwood was in complete control of the action with five shots to the Bulldogs' one, but that one shot was just enough to tie things up. From halftime on, Truman did everything but get a shot past the goalie and had 16 more shots, five of which were in the second overtime.
In goal,
Zac Suazo had a pretty quiet night for his fifth career start and played more than 90 minutes in a match for the first time ever. Suazo faced a total of three shots on goal and collected two saves.
The Bulldogs will spend the night in Quincy and take on Northeastern State of Oklahoma on Labor Day beginning at 5 p.m. Live stats and video for the match will be available right here at TrumanBulldogs.com.
