QUINCY, Ill. - Derek Merry was the hero for Truman men's soccer for the second time in as many nights on Monday against Northeastern State (Okla.). Sunday, Merry tied the match at 1-1 with Lindenwood before it ended in a deadlock, but his goal on Labor Day was even more important. With the score tied 1-1 again, the O'Fallon, Mo. native gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 win with a header just 1:29 into the first extra session.
Truman (1-0-1) improved to 5-4 in the all-time series against the RiverHawks and snapped a three-match skid against them while Northeastern State has yet to find the win column this season at 0-3.
The Bulldogs were on the scoreboard first with
Matt Yankowitz's first-career goal in the 29th minute. After that, Truman nearly made it to the end of regulation with that 1-0 advantage, but the RiverHawks evened things up with a score in the 88th minute. In the first overtime, though, Merry needed just 89 seconds to make it happen and the assist came from
Craig McLaurine, the second of his career.
Prior to 2016, Merry had played in 27 games with just one goal to show for them, but already has two in the first two matches of this year.
When looking at the team numbers, Northeastern State held the advantage in shots (11-6) and corners (3-2) while the Bulldogs led in saves (4-3) and the two squads were knotted up in shots on goal (5-5). In the net,
Zac Suazo secured his third career win with four saves in 11 total shots faced.
